Mercedes Service Overdue / Exceeded Message: What It Means

A Mercedes ASSYST PLUS message saying the service is “overdue” or “exceeded” means the displayed service due point has passed. Read the complete wording and its days or distance, then arrange the prescribed maintenance with a qualified workshop. The number does not tell you which parts to buy or establish how long you can safely postpone the work.

Quick answer: upcoming, due or overdue?

Message example What to understand
Service A in XX days An upcoming service reminder.
Service A due The displayed service is due.
Service A overdue by XX days The displayed due point has passed by the stated time.

These examples appear in the September 2015 W205 C-Class manual. The October 2014 North American CLA manual uses “Service A Exceeded by .. Days” for the overdue state. Wording varies with the car and manual edition; this comparison does not import a North American maintenance schedule into a UK car.

Does the number mean days, miles or service items?

Check the unit and surrounding words. The cited manuals explain that ASSYST PLUS can display time or distance to the service due date. A number beside a time or distance unit describes timing; a suffix attached to A or B belongs to the service description. Do not decode an isolated number from a cropped photograph.

For example, a message describing a service as overdue by days is not a list of extra jobs. If the service description is B5, our Mercedes B5 guide explains why the exact work still needs vehicle-specific verification.

Can I leave it until I have driven more miles?

Low mileage does not overturn a displayed time-based due date. The September 2018 W205 manual says late or incomplete service work can increase wear and cause damage, and instructs owners to observe the prescribed intervals. It supplies no universal overdue allowance.

Tell the workshop the complete message, current mileage and date of the reading. Ask it to establish the maintenance required for your car and advise on the timing of your appointment. This reminder alone cannot assess the car’s condition or guarantee that another journey is suitable. Describe any separate warning lamp or running problem as well.

What should I do before booking?

  1. Photograph the full display, including its unit and any A/B suffix.
  2. Gather the previous service invoice and maintenance record.
  3. Supply the model, engine and vehicle identity privately to the workshop.
  4. Request an itemised, VAT-inclusive quotation based on the applicable service requirements.

The overdue count does not price the job. Use our Service A and Service B guides for the booking questions, and the workshop-code guide if the garage needs maintenance data.

Why is it still overdue after a service?

Compare the invoice with the work that was due, and ask the garage to check the maintenance record and reminder setting. An unchanged display alone cannot prove which jobs were completed. The 2013 CLA manual places reminder resetting after service work and directs an accidental reset to a qualified workshop.

Closing a reminder message and confirming a completed service are different actions. Avoid using an unrelated online button sequence to clear the overdue count before the work and applicable procedure have been established. A basic fault-code reader should not be assumed to support ASSYST maintenance functions; see our diagnostic scanner guides when researching an exact capability.

Could a disconnected battery affect the date?

The cited W205 manuals say the service display does not calculate disconnected-battery periods in the normal way. Their guidance includes recording the due date before disconnection. If your battery was disconnected, tell the workshop the dates and ask it to check the time-based schedule. Do not treat a later-looking reminder as evidence that the maintenance itself can wait.
