The inspected 2004 and 2008 Mercedes CLK manuals both list 5.5 litres including the oil filter for the CLK200 Kompressor. The early manual lists MB 229.3 and 229.5 for this model; the later table also includes 229.31 and 229.51. Use the manual applicable to your car when choosing an oil.
Covered cars: CLK200 Kompressor C209 coupé and A209 cabriolet with the 1,796 cc petrol M271.940 or M271.955 engine. The older C208/A208, CLK200 CGI, V6, diesel and AMG versions need their own specifications. Registration year alone is not a reliable parts check.
Early and later CLK200 Kompressor oil references
| Manual reference | Named CLK200 Kompressor | Oil change with filter | MB sheets in its model-specific entry |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2004 English Mercedes manual | 120 kW version in engine table | 5.5 litres | 229.3 / 229.5 |
| 2008 German Mercedes manual | 135 kW version in engine table | 5.5 litres | 229.3 / 229.31 / 229.5 / 229.51 |
MANN identifies the earlier application as M271.940, model types 209.342/442, and the later one as M271.955, types 209.341/441. Match the engine and applicable manual rather than treating a registration year as the complete specification.
The table is a service replacement reference. It is not a top-up instruction and does not mean every engine should be given the whole quantity without checking the final level. V6 and AMG CLK engines have separate rows with different capacities.
Is a five-litre bottle enough?
Five litres is less than the manual’s listed service amount. A five-litre bottle plus one litre, or another combination providing at least 5.5 litres, covers the nominal purchase quantity. Compare the total litres and the exact formulation in each listing.
Buying six litres does not mean filling the engine with six litres. The amount needed at the end of a service is governed by the correct filling and level-check procedure. A low-level message on a running car calls for its own measured top-up, not another complete service fill.
Choose an MB approval before a brand headline
An MB sheet number and a viscosity grade describe different properties. “5W-30”, “0W-40” or “for Mercedes” alone does not establish approval for your application. Read the exact product information and bottle label against the vehicle guidance.
There are two easy mistakes in the older manual’s oil page. Its general examples mention MB 229.1, but the specific CLK200 Kompressor list names 229.3 and 229.5. In the later table, the XW-40-only footnote belongs to the AMG entry; it should not become a universal CLK200 requirement.
The early manual tells owners to choose viscosity for the expected ambient temperature. Follow the applicable manual rather than assuming every approved specification must be available in only one grade.
A specific buying option: Mobil 1 FS 0W-40
Mobil’s current UK information lists Mobil 1 FS 0W-40 with MB-Approval 229.3 and 229.5. Those approvals appear in both inspected CLK200 Kompressor manual entries. It is a concrete option where the vehicle’s guidance permits this viscosity and approval.

Check the level using your car’s instructions
The 2004 manual describes checking on level ground, with the engine at normal operating temperature and switched off for at least five minutes. Its operating-system instructions distinguish an acceptable level, an amount to add and excess oil.
Follow the method fitted to your car and its manual; do not assume every year has identical controls or level-check equipment. Add only the amount required and recheck as instructed. Overfilling is not a useful precaution: the manual warns that excess oil can damage the engine or catalytic converter.
A service reminder and an oil-level message answer separate questions. Do not reset the service display to address a low-level warning, and do not use the 5.5-litre service reference as a top-up amount.
The oil filter is a separate application check
MANN lists HU 514 x for both covered Kompressor applications. Keep the suffix when ordering. The CLK filter and spark-plug guide checks this alongside the engine air and cabin filters; oil approval does not establish filter fitment.
Ask the final invoice to record the oil product, approval and filter reference. Return to the CLK200 Kompressor maintenance guide to plan the rest of the service from the reminder and history.
