A scanner for the Mazda MX-5 RF 2.0 should match the job. Engine-warning checks and retractable-roof investigation are different requests. For a roof complaint, look for confirmed access to the roof controller on the actual RF, rather than assuming that any product advertised for the MX-5 will reach it.

Which car does this guide cover?
The reference vehicle is an early UK RF 2.0-litre 160PS manual from the 2017–2018 launch period. Later higher-output cars, automatic transmissions, the 1.5 and the fabric-roof ND require their own checks. The RF’s body equipment matters as much as its engine when selecting a diagnostic tool.
Mazda reference material: Mazda’s UK launch archive dates RF sales to March 2017 and identifies the 2.0-litre 160PS manual range. Its roof construction distinguishes this car from the conventional convertible.
Generic OBD2 versus Mazda-aware diagnostics
Standard OBD/EOBD is principally an emissions-related diagnostic route. A capable reader may provide supported engine fault codes, readiness, freeze-frame information and live values. The exact information depends on both car and tool. That access does not establish communication with ABS, restraints or every body controller. Some inexpensive tools also offer enhanced functions: compare confirmed coverage, not price alone.
| Owner question | What a basic check tells you | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Engine warning | A supported generic engine record may answer the first question. | Engine codes and available context. |
| Roof malfunction message | A clear engine scan does not clear the roof controller. | Exact RF RHT access and fault reading. |
| Need a particular switch value | “Live data” does not name every parameter. | Written confirmation of the required roof-state reading. |

What an owner report actually shows
MX-5 Owners Club: RF retractable roof malfunction: In March 2026, an RF owner reported a roof-malfunction message, a boot that would not open and a high-level brake light that was not working. The roof still opened and closed. A microswitch was suspected by the owner, but the short discussion did not supply a fault code, scanner result or completed repair. The engine and build year were not stated, so this is an RF body-system example rather than evidence of a fault specific to the early 2.0 manual.
A persistent message alongside several symptoms is a reason to obtain an appropriate diagnostic record, not to buy a switch on the strength of a forum suggestion. The thread also explains why “the roof still moves” is not the same as “there is no fault”. Record the exact message and related symptoms for a qualified repairer; do not force the mechanism or bypass its operating conditions.
What the iCarsoft catalogue lists
We checked the official function lookup on 3 November 2026 using this exact selection: JP V3.0 → MAZDA → MX-5 / ROADSTER (PE / Other) → 2.0L → Other → Other → Other.
The result includes RHT, labelled Retractable Hard Top. We expanded it: fault reading, fault-memory clearing, module information and Live Data → View Data are listed. That gives a concrete roof-controller question to put to the supplier. It is stronger evidence than a general “all systems” sales description, but is not RF-specific confirmation.
The selected PE branch does not explicitly identify RF or a build year. No individual roof-switch states were named in the live-data listing, and the RHT entry did not establish a roof actuation procedure. Ask for confirmation of the RF controller and the particular information you want. Do not borrow coverage from an NC retractable hardtop merely because its description sounds similar.
Choosing the complete scanner setup
The JP V3.0 is a standalone handheld. Its maker advertises PC/card-reader updates and no subscription. Confirm the supplied package and update requirements. This guide does not promise coding, calibration, security access or active tests.
FORScan is another candidate, with vehicle and adapter checks required. Windows and mobile versions differ; consult current availability. New Android licence sales are currently on hold.
Ask the supplier: Can this exact tool and software version read the RHT module on my UK 160PS RF 2.0 manual, and which roof-status parameters, if any, are explicitly supported? Give the VIN, build date, market, engine, transmission and relevant equipment. Ask which software version supports the requested function and what return terms apply if the stated coverage is unavailable. An answer that only repeats “works with Mazda” is not enough.

A useful roof-fault report starts with the whole complaint
Write down whether the message is constant or intermittent and whether other body functions are affected. Preserve the controller name, code and status if a suitable scan is available. Ask whether the report came from an enhanced roof session or only the standard engine session. These distinctions help a repairer interpret the evidence without turning a list of symptoms into an assumed diagnosis. A scan is not permission to operate a malfunctioning roof, and this article offers no emergency closing or mechanism-adjustment procedure.
What to keep from a scan
Save the complete code, controller name, status and any available contextual data before considering a clear command. Note which modules were actually contacted. “No codes” from one engine session is different from a documented scan of the relevant controller. Clearing memory does not repair a cause, and the absence of a warning after a reset is not proof of a successful repair.
This is a documentary scanner-selection guide. Unusual Cars has not independently tested these vehicles, products or functions. Coverage can vary with vehicle build, module, interface, application and tool software. Safety-system repair, programming, immobiliser work and calibration procedures are outside this article.
Is an upgrade worthwhile?
Buy additional coverage when it answers a defined question your present setup cannot answer. If the required function remains unconfirmed, a specialist diagnostic session can be the more useful next step.
