For an early Mercedes SLK200 or SLK250 R172 petrol, plan servicing around the exact engine, the full ASSYST PLUS message and the work already recorded. Oil and filter changes, age-related additional work and a diagnostic scan are different jobs: an A or B reminder does not identify every part to buy.
Coverage: early R172 SLK200 and SLK250 CGI/BlueEFFICIENCY petrol models with the 1,796 cc M271.861 engine. Match model type 172.448 (200) or 172.447 (250). Later 1,991 cc SLK200 M274, SLK250 CDI/diesel, SLK350, AMG and SLC models need their own application checks.
First, identify which SLK you own
| Covered application | Manufacturer catalogue identification |
|---|---|
| SLK200 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY | 172.448; M271.861; 1,796 cc; 135 kW/184 hp. |
| SLK250 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY petrol | 172.447; M271.861; 1,796 cc; 150 kW/204 hp. |
MANN lists these applications from March 2011 to June 2015. Its later SLK200 entry uses a different engine and different engine filters. Those catalogue dates identify covered applications; a registration year alone is a weaker match than model type, engine and build details together. In particular, “SLK250” search results can mix petrol and diesel cars.
What does the service reminder tell you?
The Mercedes manual describes A as the smaller service and B as the larger one. An extra character can indicate additional maintenance work. Record the whole display before requesting a quotation, then compare the proposed work with the car’s service record.
See our ASSYST PLUS explanation for the shared message system. A visible suffix such as B5 should not be converted into a universal SLK parts list.
A practical service-planning checklist
| Check | What makes the answer useful |
|---|---|
| Next service | The full reminder, current mileage and date of the previous service. |
| Engine oil and oil filter | The approval and product recorded on the invoice, plus evidence that the filter was changed. |
| Engine air filter | Date and mileage of renewal, rather than an assumption that it was included in the last B service. |
| Spark plugs | A separate renewal entry and the exact plug reference fitted. |
| Cabin filter | Confirmation that the ventilation filter was renewed; an engine air-filter entry does not cover it. |
| Brake fluid | A dated renewal entry, distinguished from checking or topping up the level. |
| Transmission | Manual or automatic, identified gearbox and a separate record of any fluid/filter service. |
This is an owner’s record check, rather than a complete workshop schedule. Use it to expose gaps before agreeing to a bundled “major service”. If invoices are missing, ask for a quotation showing which items are definitely due and which are proposed because their history cannot be established.
Which interval information is supported?
Haynes UK’s public maintenance summary for the SLK250 BlueEFF petrol, engine 271.861, lists engine air-filter and spark-plug renewal at 75,000 km or 48 months (about 46,600 miles), and brake-fluid renewal at 24 months. These are attributed planning checkpoints from a technical publisher, not a complete Mercedes schedule for every SLK200/250.
The earlier of the applicable time or distance limits matters to a lightly used weekend car. Do not carry the website’s broad year labels or the later M274 SLK200 table across to a different application. Confirm the relevant Mercedes requirements when deciding the actual work due.
Choose the oil and parts by their full references
Our SLK200/SLK250 petrol oil guide covers the named manual’s capacity, approval options and a current MB-approved oil example. It also separates an oil-change quantity from a top-up.
The SLK R172 filters and spark-plugs buying guide brings together the manufacturer references for these early petrol applications. It explains why cabin filters, engine air filters and oil filters should be itemised separately.
What to ask for on a garage quotation
- Identify the car as an early M271 petrol SLK200 or SLK250, and provide its full reminder.
- Request the service price and additional operations as separate lines, with VAT and labour clear.
- Ask for the oil brand, product, Mercedes approval and charged quantity.
- For plugs and filters, request the manufacturer and complete part reference.
- Ask which inspections are included and which reported faults need separate diagnosis.
- Keep the completed invoice and service record together; a reset display is not an itemised history.
Do you need a scanner?
A scanner can be useful when you also have a warning lamp or an operating fault, but buying one does not replace the maintenance work. For module coverage, roof-related diagnosis and the difference between basic OBD and Mercedes functions, use our existing R172 scanner guide. Avoid paying for a tool solely because its advert says “Mercedes” or “service reset”.
Questions owners ask
Is a low-mileage SLK exempt from servicing?
Check the time requirement as well as mileage. A car that has travelled little can still have work due by age; the dated service history is particularly useful here.
Does every B service include plugs and all filters?
Do not assume that from the letter. Compare the itemised quote with the additional operations due for the car and their previous renewal records.
Can I use the SLK250 CDI guide for my petrol SLK250?
No. Use the petrol engine and model identifiers above. Sharing a badge does not establish the same oil requirement, filters or ignition components.
