Land Rover Discovery 4 Buying Guide: SDV6, Timing Belts and Costs

Buying Guides / Land Rover Discovery 4 · UK edition

A Discovery 4 can tow, carry a family and cover long distances comfortably. It can also turn one unresolved warning into an expensive first year. Choose by service evidence and a lift inspection. Verify both belt jobs on the diesel, test the air suspension and set aside money for faults that an ordinary MOT will never diagnose.

Which Land Rover Discovery 4 should you buy?

Land Rover’s 2014 update describes the eight-speed ZF automatic and 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6 outputs of 211 and 256 PS in applicable markets. This guide focuses on UK diesels. Check the actual engine, transmission and transfer-case equipment and verify whether the towbar and seats meet your needs.

Common problems and inspection points

Timing belts, engine risk and cooling

On a 3.0 V6 diesel, ask for evidence of both the front camshaft timing belt and the rear high-pressure fuel-pump belt. Read the invoice to see what was fitted and when, and confirm the schedule by VIN. A belt invoice does not assess crankshaft or bearing condition. Investigate knocks, oil pressure warnings, recurring coolant loss or abnormal smoke with a Land Rover specialist. Ask about oil servicing and avoid pricing a car with an unexplained warning as if it only needs a sensor.

Air suspension, gearbox and towing

Watch how the car sits after parking and whether it raises evenly and promptly. Scan the suspension if the compressor runs excessively or warnings recur. Identify leaks and check height sensors and compressor condition before ordering a pump. On the road, test cold and warm shifts and check the transfer case and differentials for leaks or noise. Test Terrain Response, low range where fitted and the electric parking brake. Verify towbar, electrics and plated limits for the actual car.

Chassis, water and electrics

Inspect chassis and suspension mounts, brake pipes and undertrays on a lift. Look for damage from jacking or off-road use and check tyres match the drivetrain requirements. Test both tailgate sections, seats, air conditioning and cameras. Check footwells and the boot for damp and trace the source before accepting a simple seal explanation. Scan emissions and chassis modules if warnings have been cleared recently.

Maintenance and parts

Check both diesel belt jobs, engine oil and filter, and separate gearbox, transfer and axle invoices. Confirm part numbers by VIN. Book fitted quotes for the rear belt, suspension work and any access-intensive job.

Hidden ownership costs

Price both timing jobs if there is no evidence and get separate quotes for air suspension, tyres, brake pipes and transmission servicing. A towing car may need electrical repairs, cooling work or worn suspension parts. Check clean-air-zone eligibility by actual registration. For engine faults, obtain an independent diagnosis and a repair estimate before negotiating.

Land Rover Discovery 4 FAQ

Does the 3.0 diesel have two belts?

Yes. Ask separately about the front camshaft belt and rear fuel-pump belt.

Does a recent MOT prove the air suspension is healthy?

Test operation and inspect for leaks or stored faults independently.

Is a late Landmark worth a premium?

Compare specification, maintenance and condition against similar examples and price any deferred work.
