This unusual Vauxhall Chevette is a one-off C20XE restomod: a classic three-door shell reimagined with modern Vauxhall performance. It is retained here as an archive and inspiration piece, rather than a current advert—the original sale listing has ended.
Why a C20XE Chevette makes sense
The C20XE ‘red-top’ engine is a familiar route into fast Vauxhall ownership: it is compact, relatively well supported and considerably more powerful than the engines originally fitted to most Chevettes. Combined with the Chevette’s low mass and rear-wheel-drive layout, it can make a properly engineered restomod very quick and engaging.
That does not mean every conversion is equal. The engine is only one part of the build. Cooling, fuelling, wiring, gearbox choice, propshaft, differential, brakes, suspension geometry and corrosion protection determine whether a modified Chevette feels resolved or merely dramatic.
What to inspect on a Chevette restomod
- Shell and structure: look closely at sills, floors, front chassis rails, suspension pick-up points, A-pillars and rear spring mounts.
- Engineering: inspect engine mounts, wiring protection, cooling layout, fuel system and exhaust routing.
- Transmission and axle: confirm the gearbox, propshaft and differential are suitable for the engine’s torque.
- Brakes and suspension: check the specification, condition and whether the work is documented.
- Paperwork: match the V5C, engine declaration, MOT history, invoices and insurance details to the finished car.

Restomod or rally homage?
Chevette HS and HSR names are often used loosely because of their rally reputation. A C20XE conversion can be an excellent road car or track-day build, but it should be valued honestly as a modified Chevette unless it has strong evidence of an original homologation-special identity.
