What a generic OBD2 reader can tell you
Generic OBD2 focuses on emissions-related information. Depending on support, it can show stored and pending faults, freeze-frame conditions, emissions readiness and standard live values. Use that information to preserve an engine-light record. A clean generic scan cannot certify the DSG, brakes, airbag or body electronics as fault-free. Equally, a code describing a sensor is an investigation clue, not an instruction to replace it.

A suitable route uses current VCDS software, a supported Windows computer and a genuine CAN-capable Ross-Tech interface. Record build details, engine and gearbox identity, mileage, modifications and the complaint. Follow the selected tool’s connection instructions with the vehicle stationary. Save the complete original report before making changes, including fault status and any available freeze-frame information.
Some controller timestamps can be unreliable. Preserve the original record without assuming that every displayed fault date is accurate. If only an engine scan is available, describe it as an engine scan rather than a full vehicle check. Ross-Tech: fault-code records.
Clearing faults can remove useful evidence and reset emissions readiness; it does not repair the underlying condition.
