For a pre-facelift diesel BMW 5 Series G30 or G31, compare a matched BimmerLink phone setup, current BMW-focused handheld and eligible OBDeleven device for the required report. A compatible generic OBD2 reader may suit supported engine-emissions information. Body, chassis, automatic-transmission and xDrive reporting require separate coverage checks. Late 520d mild hybrids and G31 Touring equipment make the actual build especially useful in the enquiry. Compare these buying routes in our BMW scanner comparison.
This is a documentary buying guide. Unusual Cars has not independently tested this vehicle, scanner or function. Exact access varies by build, fitted controller, vehicle software, interface and tool version.

Which G30 and G31 diesels does this cover?
This guide covers UK G30 four-door Saloons and G31 five-door Touring estates from their 2017 introductions up to the 2020 facelift boundary. It includes standard four- and six-cylinder diesel variants where UK supplied, including 520d and 530d, with factory rear-wheel drive or xDrive and eight-speed automatic transmission. Standard M Sport trim is included.
Late pre-facelift 520d and 520d xDrive 48V builds are identified separately for reporting enquiries. This is not a 48V battery, electrical isolation or repair guide. Confirm the actual engine and production details rather than assuming every pre-facelift diesel has the same equipment.
Petrol and plug-in hybrid variants, M550d, F90 M5, facelift and later G30/G31 builds, F10/F11, G60/G61, Alpina, imports and materially modified electronics are excluded. Performance and hybrid configurations require their own evidence. The grouped Saloon/Touring scope does not promise identical controller access.
Late 520d 48V cars predate the facelift
The BMW UK G30 launch identifies the original UK G30 diesel range and eight-speed automatic arrangements. The BMW UK G31 Touring launch establishes the G31 estate separately. Use those documents to identify the application; neither is a scanner compatibility chart.
The BMW UK 2020 facelift and earlier48V introduction states that 48V mild-hybrid equipment first appeared on 520d and 520d xDrive during autumn 2019, before the 2020 facelift. A late pre-facelift 520d therefore needs its electrical specification identified. Styling and registration year alone cannot settle that question.
Keep the production date and facelift status in a coverage enquiry. The refreshed 2020 range has its own equipment and software context and is outside this first guide. Do not extend a report supported on an early 2017 car to a later build simply because the diesel badge remains familiar.
For a standard six-cylinder diesel, identify the exact variant and drive arrangement as well. A general 5 Series recommendation or a list of controller names in a sales advert is not proof that the current hardware/software combination supports the requested reporting task.

Codes describe evidence, not the replacement part
A G31 2018 520d report interpretation question shows a 2018 G31 520d owner trying to infer a failed component from a saved report. That is a useful selection question: what information is the reader supplying, and what investigation is still needed? The discussion does not establish the cause, a repair procedure or current scanner coverage.
Preserve the complete codes, controller names, available operating conditions and symptoms. Different tools and connection profiles can present information differently. A code naming a sensor or measured condition is not automatically a verdict that the named part should be replaced. Do not import the forum’s repair instructions into your own car’s diagnosis.
An empty engine-emissions scan also does not establish a clear automatic-transmission, body or chassis report. Ask what was actually queried. The useful next step is a report from the relevant fitted controller where support is established, followed by an appropriate investigation.
G31 Touring rear suspension and body reporting
BMW’s Touring chassis documentation identifies self-levelling rear air suspension on G31. That gives a suspension enquiry a different equipment context from a general Saloon question. It does not establish a scanner’s access or prove that an observed ride-height complaint has an electronic cause.
For a suspension concern, provide G31 and the fitted equipment, then ask for the relevant controller’s fault-report support and any requested measured values separately. An engine-only result cannot settle that enquiry. A saved scan cannot rule out every mechanical or pneumatic condition requiring inspection.
Identify the Touring body for tailgate or rear-glass complaints as well. A shared engine and 5 Series badge do not establish identical body reporting. This article provides no air-suspension calibration, ride-height adjustment, actuator test or body-controller programming instructions.
Automatic transmission and xDrive are separate enquiries
All cars in this defined scope use an eight-speed automatic, but the fitted engine, drivetrain, controller and software still belong in the support enquiry. Ask for the exact automatic-transmission report. Do not interpret an engine code or dashboard drivetrain message as confirmation of a gearbox failure.
On an xDrive car, request the relevant drivetrain reporting support separately. On a rear-wheel-drive car, do not buy for an xDrive task it does not have. Fault reading, measured values and adaptation or commanded operations are different capabilities. This guide gives no transfer-case reset, gearbox adaptation or active-test instructions.
BimmerLink and an appropriate G-series interface
BimmerLink supported models lists 5 Series from 2003. A phone route is a candidate for checking G30/G31, with exact build and controller confirmation. The app and adapter are separate purchases; family eligibility does not prove every advertised function. For the full hardware and phone checklist, read our BimmerLink adapter guide.
Consult the Developer adapter selector linked by BimmerLink linked by the developer. Its F/G/I ENET rows differ from some inexpensive F/I Bluetooth entries. An adapter recommended for an F10 may therefore not be a confirmed G30 setup. Use the exact current model and phone-platform selection.
The UniCarScan UCSI-2100 UK package documents UCSI-2100 as a candidate for supported iOS and Android BimmerLink setups. For wired ENET, the phone needs the correct Ethernet connection as well as the cable. Confirm the build and required report rather than assuming a matching plug establishes communication.
The BimmerLink App Store requirements reviewed requires iOS 15 or later. Check Android compatibility on the actual device. BimmerCode is a separate coding app. Its compatibility wording is not evidence of a diagnostic report or maintenance command in BimmerLink.
A BMW handheld with current G30/G31 coverage
iCarsoft BMM V3.0 advertises broad E-through-G support and lifetime PC/card-reader updates. Check the exact BMM generation, current vehicle database and requested controller. Broad G-series wording makes it a candidate; it is not an exact report list for your diesel Saloon or Touring. Our iCarsoft BMM V3.0 buying guide explains package, update and coverage checks.
The standalone screen may suit someone who prefers a separate device, but updates still need a suitable computer. Ask what lead and update equipment are included, what support the supplier offers and whether the exact coverage answer is available. Avoid selecting on a “dealer level” label without a named reporting capability.
No service reset, battery registration, regeneration, coding or calibration is guaranteed here. Those requests can involve different prerequisites from reading a report. In particular, a general battery-service advert is not proof of the operation required on a late 520d with additional 48V equipment.
OBDeleven: diagnostics before optional features
OBDeleven vehicle support includes G-series BMWs. OBDeleven Advanced Diagnostics identifies OBDeleven 2 NextGen or 3 with the BMW-capable OBDeleven app and FREE supported diagnostics. The VAG-only app and FirstGen device are not equivalent BMW setups.
The OBDeleven BMW features currently recommends OBDeleven 3 to new BMW buyers. Check the G30/G31 build and requested report. Optional One-Click Apps have separate country and vehicle conditions; they do not create universal service-function support.

The OBDeleven licence terms distinguishes optional Credits and subscriptions from diagnostics. Recheck activation and renewal terms before paying for extra features. VAG manual-coding and adaptation claims do not transfer to BMW, and a paid plan cannot establish a function absent from the actual car’s support.
Legitimate BMW software and a useful handoff
BMW AOS is the official BMW workshop route to investigate. The BMW AOS technical requirements lists 64-bit Windows Professional/Enterprise and ICOM Next or suitable SAE J2534 hardware. Confirm current application entitlement, configuration and exact vehicle access directly.
A phone adapter or ENET cable is not the complete official software package. This guide recommends no copied INPA/ISTA downloads or licence bypass. A specialist handoff should identify G30/G31, diesel engine, gearbox, rear-wheel drive/xDrive, production date, relevant 48V equipment and the saved report. Explain which previous controller enquiries remain unanswered.
Selecting a scanner from the BMW Amazon search
The Amazon graphic opens a focused BMW scanner or adapter search. It includes generic readers, handhelds and adapters with different software and coverage. An advert mentioning 5 Series or BMW does not establish a current G30/G31 diesel reporting package.
Ask the supplier for the exact build and named task. Include Touring suspension/body equipment where relevant, plus the phone/app/interface for a phone route. Check what is supplied, what costs extra, how updates work and what return/support terms apply. Keep the coverage answer alongside the vehicle details so the purchase is based on the required report.
Common questions
Does pre-facelift mean the 520d has no 48V equipment?
No. BMW introduced it on relevant 520d variants in autumn 2019, before the 2020 facelift.
Can an engine reader settle a Touring suspension warning?
No. Establish the appropriate fitted-controller report separately; inspection may still be needed.
Does this cover a 530e or M550d?
No. Plug-in hybrids and M Performance diesels are outside this standard diesel scope.
More BMW diagnostic guides
Browse the BMW diagnostic scanner hub and complete car diagnostic-scanner directory. Choose the guide for the actual generation; shared badges or tool brands do not establish identical diagnostic coverage.
For the neighbouring generation or body, see the F10/F11 guide. Its scope and tool limits remain separate. Research reviewed: 13 October 2026. Product coverage, software terms and the commercial destination were rechecked for publication; confirm the exact current product and build before purchase.
