For a 1.8-litre C180 or C200 Kompressor W203/S203, identify the engine, record the full ASSYST reminder and compare it with dated maintenance invoices. An A or B message gives service information; it does not prove which filters, plugs or fluids were last renewed or establish a universal shopping list.

Coverage: 1.8-litre C180 Kompressor M271.946 and C200 Kompressor M271.940 in W203 saloon and S203 estate applications. Earlier M111 engines, the C200 CGI, newer W204 cars and other engines need separate checks. Sport Coupé parts coverage is identified separately in the buying guide.
Which C180 or C200 are you servicing?
| Covered engine | Displacement | MANN output |
|---|---|---|
| C180 Kompressor — M271.946 | 1,796 cc petrol | 105 kW / 143 hp |
| C200 Kompressor — M271.940 | 1,796 cc petrol | 120 kW / 163 hp |
The C-Class badge spans different engines and generations. A C180 without the same Kompressor application, an earlier C200 Kompressor or a newer W204 can require different parts. Check the engine identity rather than choosing the first “C180 service kit” result.
MANN names the covered applications in its W203/C203/S203 range. For maintenance-display and oil guidance here, the inspected Mercedes manual covers the saloon and estate. The 203-series parts guide also identifies manufacturer-supported Sport Coupé applications without assuming every body-specific instruction is shared.
Understand the ASSYST reminder before buying parts
The reviewed manual calls the system ASSYST. It distinguishes a smaller A service and a larger B service, with a countdown in time or distance and a message when work is due or overdue. Give the workshop the complete display information alongside the mileage.
Ask for the actual inspections and any additional operations due on the car. A reminder cannot tell you whether a previous owner renewed the cabin filter or fitted the correct spark plugs. Our general Service A and Service B guides explain the wider service-label context.
Build a record that separates the individual jobs
Start with the last itemised invoices, not just the words “full service”. Record the date and mileage for each renewal. If evidence is missing, ask a workshop to distinguish work needed to establish a baseline from work already demonstrated as complete.
| Item | Record to check |
|---|---|
| Oil and oil filter | Oil product, MB approval, complete filter reference, date and mileage. |
| Engine air filter | A separate renewal entry; cabin-filter work does not cover it. |
| Cabin filtration | Steering side, THERMATIC or THERMOTRONIC equipment and exact filter references. |
| Spark plugs | Plug reference, quantity and the engine-number application used. |
| Brake fluid | Actual renewal date, distinct from a level check. |
| Transmission | Manual/automatic gearbox identity and any separate fluid/filter service record. |
Use the applicable service documentation to establish renewal timing. Parts catalogues answer “which application?”; they do not establish when a filter or plug is due. A bundled kit should support identified work rather than define the service.
Stored cars: account for battery-disconnected time
The inspected manual says ASSYST does not record periods when the battery is disconnected. Tell the workshop the dates if the car has been stored that way. A displayed countdown alone is not a complete record of elapsed maintenance time.
Keep calendar dates alongside the mileage even if the car is used infrequently. Also list separate symptoms: a warning lamp, rough running or a gearbox problem needs assessment on its own evidence rather than an assumption that routine servicing will cure it.
Compare garage quotations on the same basis
- Supply the engine details, complete reminder, mileage and relevant invoices.
- Ask which inspections and operations are included, with labour and VAT clear.
- Separate scheduled work, missing-history recommendations and fault diagnosis.
- Request the exact oil approval and complete filter references.
- Give the supplier the engine number when checking the plug application.
- Identify the climate-control system before agreeing cabin-filter parts.
- Confirm the gearbox before authorising transmission fluid work.
After completion, keep the itemised invoice and service-record update together. The manual distinguishes hiding a message from the workshop’s service reset; a reset alone does not establish what maintenance was done.
Use the oil and parts guides for the buying detail
The W203/S203 Kompressor oil guide covers the inspected manual’s capacity, approvals and level-check conditions, plus a current named oil example.
Our C180/C200 Kompressor filter and spark-plug guide checks the full references, including the plug engine-number split and right-hand-drive cabin-filter conditions. Use it to question an incomplete quotation or compare a proposed kit.
Explore the Mercedes maintenance hub. For separate warning lamps, running faults, ESP or gearbox diagnosis, see our W203 diagnostic scanner guide.
