Mercedes C180/C200 Kompressor W204/S204 Service and Maintenance Guide

Start a W204/S204 C180 or C200 Kompressor service by identifying the exact M271 engine and recording the complete ASSYST PLUS message. The C180 includes both 1.6- and 1.8-litre Kompressor applications. Their shared badge does not make every service part interchangeable.

Coverage: W204 saloon and S204 estate C180/C200 Kompressor with M271.910, M271.952 or M271.950, subject to the application conditions below. Later CGI/turbo engines, C204 coupés and older W203/CLC models require their own guidance.

Which C180 or C200 Kompressor do you have?

Kompressor versionEngine / displacementMANN model types
C180 1.6 BlueEFFICIENCYM271.910 / 1,597 cc204.044/045/245
C180 1.8M271.952 / 1,796 cc204.046/246
C200 1.8M271.950 / 1,796 cc204.041/241

MANN lists the two C180 applications at 115 kW/156 hp and the C200 at 135 kW/184 hp. The same C180 output therefore does not distinguish the 1.6 from the 1.8. Confirm engine and model details from the vehicle documentation or a supplier’s vehicle check before approving a parts order.

A later C180 1.6 can instead have the turbocharged M274.910. Similarly, later M271 CGI applications have separate catalogue branches. “C180”, “1.6” or “M271” alone is too broad for a complete service kit.

What does the W204 ASSYST PLUS message mean?

The 2007 Mercedes manual describes A as a minor service and B as a major service. A following number or letter indicates additional maintenance. The display can show days or distance remaining, a service due message, or an overdue message.

Give the garage the full display and mileage. A suffix such as B5 does not establish the same parts list across different vehicles. Ask the workshop to identify the actual operations for your car and its history.

For the general background, see Mercedes Service A explained and Service B explained. Use this W204 guide for the engine and parts distinctions.

Build a useful service history

An invoice that says only “full service” is difficult to use when planning the next visit. Keep each renewal identifiable, including the date, mileage and complete product reference where relevant.

Maintenance recordWhat to establish
Engine oil and oil filterOil product, declared MB approval, quantity and complete filter reference.
Engine air filterEngine application and last actual renewal.
Cabin filterSteering side, full reference and renewal date.
Spark plugsEngine code, any engine-number condition, full reference and quantity fitted.
Brake fluidLast actual renewal date and the applicable calendar requirement.
TransmissionGearbox identity and itemised previous fluid/filter work.

Where records are missing, ask the garage to separate work due under the applicable service requirements from work proposed to establish a baseline. Keep inspections and renewals distinct. A convenient kit should supply agreed parts rather than determine which jobs are due.

Oil: check the manual entry as well as the quantity

The inspected 2007 saloon manual lists a 5.5-litre change with filter for its 1.8 C180/C200 Kompressor entries. A later estate manual also gives 5.5 litres for its country-specific C180 Kompressor BlueEFFICIENCY entry, but its approval list differs.

Our W204 Kompressor oil guide compares those entries, explains pack sizes and provides a clearly scoped buying option. It keeps the 2007 1.8 evidence separate from the later BlueEFFICIENCY reference.

Filters and plugs: the difference worth checking

The covered engines share MANN’s engine-conditioned C 14 114 air-filter and HU 514 x oil-filter references. Spark plugs need a closer distinction: NGK lists PLKR7A for the 1.6 M271.910, while the covered 1.8 rows use PLKR7B8E, with an engine-number condition on the C200 row.

The W204 Kompressor filters and spark-plugs guide retains those conditions and the right-hand-drive cabin-filter suffix. It also explains why a catalogue match does not tell you the replacement interval.

Storage and the next workshop visit

Mercedes says ASSYST PLUS does not count periods when the battery is disconnected. Keep the dates and tell the workshop so elapsed time can be accounted for. The manual says the indicator is reset after the required work.

When requesting a quote, provide the engine details, complete reminder, mileage and itemised history. Mention separate warning lamps, starting problems or leaks. Ask for parts, labour and VAT to be clear, with fault investigation identified alongside routine maintenance.

If your car is the preceding generation, use our W203/S203 Kompressor maintenance guide.

Sources and coverage

Checked 20 October 2026. Mercedes sources are the 2007 saloon manual and 2011 estate manual hosted by Mercedes-Benz. The later C180 Kompressor BlueEFFICIENCY entry has a country restriction. Match the edition and specification applicable to your car; a catalogue application does not establish a renewal interval.
