Mercedes E200/E250 CGI W212/S212 Service and Maintenance Guide

Servicing an early E200 or E250 CGI W212 saloon or S212 estate starts with identifying the 1.8-litre petrol engine, reading the complete ASSYST PLUS message and checking what has already been renewed. The reminder gives service information; the applicable Service Booklet and vehicle service information determine the operations due.

Coverage: early 1,796 cc petrol E200 CGI and E250 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY applications in the W212 saloon and S212 estate. Later 1,991 cc M274 petrol models, NGT gas models and CDI diesels need their own specifications. C207 coupés and A207 cabriolets have a separate maintenance guide.

Which E200 or E250 are you maintaining?

MANN 212-series applicationEngine codes listedOutput
E200 CGI BlueEFFICIENCYM271.820 / M271.860; 1,796 cc135 kW / 184 hp
E250 CGI BlueEFFICIENCYM271.860; 1,796 cc150 kW / 204 hp

MANN groups two engine codes under its early E200 CGI entry. Check the actual car instead of assuming every E200 uses one code. Its catalogue also separates later M274 petrol entries and the E200 NGT. The badge alone is too broad for a service-kit purchase.

For a used estate or saloon, keep a note of body style, engine code, mileage and transmission alongside the service record. Give those details privately to the workshop or supplier when it needs to resolve an application.

ASSYST PLUS: what A, B and a suffix establish

The inspected Mercedes manual describes A as a minor service and B as a major service, with a further number or letter indicating additional maintenance. It refers owners to the separate Service Booklet for service types and intervals.

Record the full display before asking for a quotation. A B5 or A7 search result cannot establish a universal shopping list for this petrol engine. Ask the garage to identify each additional operation and its reason for being due. Our W212 ASSYST PLUS service-code guide explains the display in more detail.

Build a useful record from previous invoices

A stamp or “full service” description may not tell you which extra items were included. Make a dated list from itemised invoices, marking gaps as unknown rather than assuming every component was renewed together.

Record to establishWhat to look for
Oil and oil filterExact oil product and MB approval, filter reference, date and mileage.
Engine air and cabin filtersSeparate renewal entries, with the cabin reference suitable for steering side.
Spark plugsPlug reference and quantity, plus the last renewal date and mileage.
Brake fluidEvidence of renewal, distinct from a level check.
TransmissionGearbox identity and a separate fluid/filter service record where applicable.

Use that record when comparing quotations. If one garage includes plugs and another does not, ask whether the difference reflects scheduled work, missing history or simply a package name. There is little value in comparing totals before comparing their contents.

City use and long periods parked

Mercedes identifies regular city driving with frequent stops and other arduous conditions as reasons some work may be needed more often. Discuss the actual use with a specialist instead of inventing a shorter mileage interval from a general internet recommendation.

The manual also says battery-disconnected time is not counted by ASSYST PLUS. Give the workshop the storage dates if that applies. Low annual mileage and an apparently generous countdown do not reconstruct a missing calendar history.

Separate servicing from diagnosis

If the engine runs poorly, supply a description of when it happens and any warning messages. Buying routine plugs or filters is not proof that they caused the fault. The existing scanner guide explains choosing diagnostic coverage beyond a basic engine-code reader.

Similarly, describe gearbox behaviour or suspension concerns as separate jobs. An oil service does not establish the correct transmission fluid, gearbox maintenance requirement or cause of a suspension problem.

A practical workshop quotation checklist

  • Supply the full service display, mileage and relevant invoices.
  • Request the scheduled operations and any proposed catch-up work separately.
  • Confirm oil approval, complete part references, labour and VAT.
  • Identify the gearbox before authorising transmission work.
  • Ask for the completed work and service-record update on the final invoice.

A reminder reset should follow completed work. Keep the invoice: the display alone cannot show which oil, filters or plugs were fitted.

Oil and parts for the early CGI engine

Our W212/S212 E200/E250 CGI oil guide explains the 5.5-litre reference and the inspected manual’s approvals. The filters and spark-plugs guide provides manufacturer application references and buying checks. Together they support a parts discussion without treating a kit as the maintenance schedule.

Find related guides in the Mercedes maintenance hub. For warning lamps, fault codes, gearbox or suspension diagnosis, see the early W212 diagnostic scanner guide.

Sources and applicability

Checked 20 October 2026. The Mercedes-hosted English 2012 E-Class manual includes saloon and estate equipment. Its online disclaimer specifies German-market coverage and says it does not replace the manual supplied with the vehicle. Match UK requirements against your own manual, Service Booklet and supplements.
