Mercedes-Benz OBD2 Diagnostic Scanner Guides

← Back to all car diagnostic scanner guides

Find a diagnostic scanner guide for your Mercedes-Benz model and generation.

Start with the actual car and the information needed. Compare a basic engine-emissions reader, a confirmed Mercedes-aware tool and a specialist report. A manufacturer badge or model-family listing does not prove every controller or function.

Mercedes-Benz diagnostic scanner guides

Sixty-nine published guides cover these UK petrol models, with engine, transmission, facelift and controller differences kept separate.

Choose a diagnostic route

Generic OBD2/EOBD

A compatible basic reader may be sufficient for supported engine-emissions codes, readiness, freeze-frame and engine data. Some transmission-related codes can appear through this route, but it is not a complete transmission or body-system report.

Mercedes-aware tools

Compare suitable LAUNCH, iCarsoft, Autel and other reputable tools by exact build, fitted controller and reading task. Four-system tools and full-system candidates serve different needs. Confirm current hardware, software, update costs and written coverage before buying for a particular function.

Mercedes specialist

For a single complex warning or communication problem, compare a specialist report with the full purchase/setup cost. Ask about legitimate XENTRY/DAS equipment appropriate to these older cars. XENTRY Pass Thru eligibility cannot be inferred from an OBD socket.

Identify the car before choosing a scanner

Pre-facelift C63 W204/S204, original 6.2-litre E63 W212/S212 and SL63 R230 have separate diagnostic guides from their non-AMG counterparts. Check the actual powertrain and each fitted controller; a shared chassis listing does not establish exact access.

E63 AMG saloon/estate, standard CLK63 AMG coupe/cabriolet and ML63 AMG W164 have separate diagnostic guides from their non-AMG counterparts. Check the actual powertrain and each fitted controller; a shared chassis listing does not establish exact access.

E55 AMG saloon/estate, SL55 AMG R230 and CLS63 AMG C219 have separate diagnostic guides from their non-AMG counterparts. Check the actual powertrain and each fitted controller; a shared chassis listing does not establish exact access.

C55 AMG saloon/estate, CLS55 AMG C219 and SLK55 AMG R171 have separate diagnostic guides from their non-AMG counterparts. Check the actual powertrain and each fitted controller; a shared chassis listing does not establish exact access.

Facelift C63 AMG saloon/estate, CLK55 AMG C209/A209 and SLK55 AMG R172 have separate diagnostic guides from their non-AMG counterparts. Check the actual powertrain and each fitted controller; a shared chassis listing does not establish exact access.

Later SLK 2.0, facelift CLS 400 3.5/seven-speed and later ML500 5.5 have separate guides from their earlier engine scopes. Check the actual powertrain and each fitted controller; a shared chassis listing does not establish exact access.

The later C180 1.6 coupe, facelift CL500 4.7 and pre-facelift SL400 each have separate guides from the original engine scopes. These keep manual/seven-speed, brake, body, roof and actual suspension enquiries distinct; a shared chassis name is not an exact compatibility certificate.

The facelift 2.0-litre E-Class guides are separate from the earlier CGI scopes. E200 body availability and E250 estate suspension need their own checks. The pre-facelift GLA200 1.6 guide covers the documented UK front-wheel-drive manual/DCT specification separately from GLA250 4MATIC.

The CLC and original C204 coupe guides keep their engine and gearbox changes separate. Early R231 coverage stops before the SL400 revision and distinguishes ADS from ABC. Original W176 petrol, early UK CLA180 and launch C200 W205 each have their own transmission, body, roof and fitted-suspension limits.

The SLC200/300 guide separates original manual and nine-speed petrol cars from earlier SLK specifications. The UK GL63 AMG X166 guide checks AIRMATIC and Active Curve roll-control reading separately. The original UK S500L guide distinguishes its V8/seven-speed specification and standard AIRMATIC from optional MAGIC BODY CONTROL; hybrid and later revisions are excluded.

The early W246 B180/B200 petrol guide separates manual from 7G-DCT and checks fitted panoramic-roof reading. The original UK GLA250 guide treats DCT and 4MATIC access separately; later UK GLA200 is excluded. The X164 GL500 guide retains the naturally aspirated 5.5-litre engine across the 2009 facelift and separates AIRMATIC/ADS from transfer-case reading. The later X166 4.7-litre engine needs its own scope.

The A200 Turbo and B200 Turbo guides cover original pre-facelift cars, separating six-speed manuals from AUTOTRONIC CVT and the diagnostic lists’ November/December 2005 build branches. Exact opening-roof reading is not established by an overhead-panel entry. The C216 guide covers the early rear-wheel-drive CL500 5.5 V8, with ABC checked separately; facelift 4.7 and 4MATIC versions are excluded.

The W163 guide covers selected original petrol five-speed automatics, with UK market and actual connection checked separately. The W164 guide covers original ML350 and 5.0 ML500 petrol branches; the R-Class guide covers original 4MATIC R350 and 5.0 R500. Later V8 engines and revisions are separate scopes. W164 named AIRMATIC evidence does not establish R-Class rear-levelling or full-AIRMATIC data access, and W164 transfer-case entries do not prove R-Class coverage.

The W210/S210 guide covers selected M112 petrol V6 automatics, with the complete legacy connection package checked separately. The W220/V220 guide separates the 2002 facelift from the later V8 gearbox change. The W221/V221 guide covers original pre-facelift S350/S500 petrol engines only. AIRMATIC, ABC and a broad suspension-controller label are separate documentary findings.

The W204/S204 guide covers selected early Kompressor and non-CGI V6 petrol versions; later CGI engines and the C204 coupé are excluded. The W212/S212 guide separates original M271/M272 CGI cars from later engines and distinguishes estate rear levelling from full AIRMATIC. The C218 guide covers the UK pre-facelift CLS 350 petrol only, with optional AIRMATIC checked separately.

The C207/A207 guide is limited to early CGI petrol engines; later M276 and facelift M274 versions are separate scopes. Its A207 fabric-top access is not established by a sliding-roof or AIRSCARF entry. The R172 guide covers early 1.8-litre SLK 200/250 and 3.5-litre SLK 350; later 2.0-litre, nine-speed and SLC versions are excluded.

The C-Class guide separates W203 saloons and S203 estates from SportCoupé/CLC models. The E-Class guide keeps W211/S211 brake and fitted-suspension differences explicit. The R129 guide covers only the 1998–2001 M112 SL 320 V6 and M113 SL 500; earlier engines require a separate guide.

The first CLK guide covers C208 coupés and A208 cabriolets, commonly grouped under W208 shorthand. The later CLK coupé is C209 and the cabriolet is A209, often grouped under W209 shorthand. CLS 350 and 350 CGI are different engine branches, and the CLS 500 badge spans 5.0 and 5.5-litre V8s. The SLK 280 badge does not mean a 2.8-litre engine. Registration year, original build and facelift styling are different identifiers.

The R170 guide separates actual 38-pin and 16-pin access. SL R230 engine changes, its early SL 500 transmission change and the CL 500 five-/seven-speed split need their own build checks; facelift styling alone is insufficient.

Transmission, ABS/ESP, roof, body and suspension controller reading must be checked separately where fitted. AIRMATIC is relevant to appropriately equipped CLS models; it must not be transferred to SLK or CLK from a broad Mercedes menu. ABC is relevant to the CL 500 and appropriately equipped SL R230 models; it is a separate system from AIRMATIC. Code reading does not establish mechanical condition or coding, programming, calibration, active-test or security functions.

How these guides are researched

These are documentary guides based on manufacturer material, named-controller references, UK-market records and real owner questions. Unusual Cars has not independently tested the vehicles, tools or functions. Owner reports identify questions rather than proving causes, frequency or universal compatibility. Exact functions vary by vehicle build, module, software, interface and tool version.
