Mercedes E220 CDI W211/S211 Service and Maintenance Guide

To plan an E220 CDI W211/S211 service, identify the OM646 engine, confirm DPF fitment and record the full ASSYST PLUS message. The inspected W211 manuals describe letters A–H as indications of workshop time. A letter alone is not an itemised list of filters, fluids or other work due on your car.

Coverage: E220 CDI W211 saloon and S211 estate with OM646.961 or OM646.821. Newer W212 E220 CDI and other E-Class engines require their own specifications. DPF fitment must be checked separately.

Which E220 CDI are you servicing?

E220 CDI applicationEngine / displacementMANN output
Earlier W211/S211OM646.961 / 2,148 cc110 kW / 150 hp
Later W211/S211OM646.821 / 2,148 cc125 kW / 170 hp

MANN separates these engine applications. Its catalogue dates are 03/02–07/06 for OM646.961 and 06/06–12/09 for OM646.821. Their overlap around 2006 is a reason to confirm the engine from vehicle details, rather than choose parts solely from a registration year.

DPF fitment is a separate check. Mercedes’ earlier manual already distinguishes E220 CDI versions with and without a particulate filter. Do not assume that an earlier car has no DPF, or select oil from the “CDI” badge alone.

What do W211 service letters A–H mean?

Both inspected manuals explain the letters in terms of the time the workshop needs, from a shorter duration at A to a longer duration at H. The display can show an approaching appointment in days or distance, then a due or overdue message.

Give the garage the complete message and mileage, and ask it to establish the required operations from the car’s service information and history. A change from one letter to another should not be translated into an internet shopping list without that check.

The March 2004 manual also describes an additional + beside the service type as a brake-pad wear indication. That edition-specific explanation should be matched to the actual display and applicable manual. It is not a reason to ignore a separate brake warning or assume every W211 uses identical message details.

Keep the individual maintenance jobs visible

A stamped book is useful, but itemised invoices show what was actually renewed. Record the date and mileage for each operation and distinguish renewal from an inspection or level check.

ItemWhat to establish
Engine oil and oil filterExact oil approval, DPF status, product and filter reference.
Engine air filterOM646.961 or .821 application and full reference.
Cabin filtrationSteering side, climate equipment and any additional filter elements.
Fuel filterComplete reference and water-sensor connection configuration.
Brake fluidActual renewal date.
TransmissionGearbox identity, past fluid/filter work and any separate symptoms.

Where records are incomplete, ask the workshop to distinguish scheduled work from recommendations to establish a baseline. A kit can supply agreed parts; its contents should not define the service.

Brake fluid and storage: keep calendar dates

The March 2004 Mercedes manual specifies brake-fluid renewal every two years. Retain the actual change date and confirm the next due date against the service information for your car.

ASSYST PLUS does not count periods when the battery is disconnected. Record any such storage dates and tell the workshop so it can account for elapsed time. An apparently generous countdown is not a complete record of calendar maintenance.

Oil and filters: the details that affect buying

The inspected earlier and later manuals list a 6.5-litre oil change with filter for the E220 CDI. Approval depends on DPF fitment and the applicable guidance. Our W211/S211 E220 CDI oil guide compares the two editions and gives clearly scoped product options.

For engine air filtration, MANN lists different references for the two OM646 versions. Cabin filtration introduces steering-side and equipment checks, while the fuel-filter catalogue distinguishes a water-sensor connection option. See the E220 CDI filter buying guide before approving a mixed-model kit.

What to send when requesting a service quotation

  • Model, engine details, mileage and the full service display.
  • DPF status and the applicable manual or service specification.
  • Last itemised invoices and battery-disconnected storage dates.
  • Any separate warnings, starting problems, leaks or gearbox symptoms.

Ask the garage to list inspections, renewals, parts, labour and VAT. Keep diagnostic work identifiable alongside routine servicing. A reset changes the reminder; it does not establish what maintenance was performed.

If your car is the next generation, use the W212 E220 CDI maintenance guide instead of applying this W211 page to it.

Checked 20 October 2026. Mercedes references are the March 2004 German manual hosted by Spookies and the February 2008 English manual hosted by Mercedes-Benz. Both include saloon/estate information. The online 2008 document states a German-market scope despite its English language; match the manual and service information applicable to your UK car.
