A pre-facelift SL400 needs its own scanner enquiry. Its twin-turbo V6 is outside our original SL350/SL500 scope. The useful purchase depends on whether you need engine information, a seven-speed transmission report, the folding roof, optional glass control or the actual suspension controller.
Which UK SL400 R231 is covered?
The UK SL list effective 1 September 2015 documents the pre-facelift SL400: 2,996cc twin-turbo V6 petrol, 245kW/333PS and 7G-TRONIC PLUS. This guide uses that combination rather than every car carrying an SL400 badge. The 2014 UK introduction report and later facelift brochure are useful chronology markers; they are not exact first-build, last-build or registration cutoffs.
| Included branch | Transmission | Identify separately |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-facelift UK SL400 R231, documented September 2015 specification | Seven-speed 7G-TRONIC PLUS | Vario roof; optional MAGIC SKY CONTROL; standard ADS versus optional ABC |
The later facelift/nine-speed SL400 needs a separate scope. Original SL350/SL500, AMG, R230/R232, imports and modified systems are excluded. A later registration can belong to an earlier build. Confirm the actual engine, gearbox, body revision and equipment before transferring any scanner result.
What SL400 owners actually ask
A 2015 SL400 owner reports a loose roof flap and describes a broken component. That is a mechanical question, not proof that a roof controller has failed or that a new reader will cure it. A clean memory cannot establish the condition of the linkage; this guide does not adopt the thread’s repair suggestions.
In a 2015 SL400 discussion comparing Autel and LAUNCH, a US owner reports that an Autel MK808S scanned many controllers but asks why oil temperature and oil-level information could not be found. Another contributor describes LAUNCH Creader Elite/X500 use and identifies Vario roof N52 and MAGIC SKY N53 separately. These are useful owner reports, not independent Unusual Cars tests or a current UK compatibility certificate.
The practical buying question is more precise than “full-system scan”: can this exact tool retrieve the named controller and the particular data item you need? A module count does not prove oil-level or temperature availability. Do not transfer update costs, software equivalence, coding claims or functions mentioned in that discussion to a different UK package.

What do the separate controller references establish?
The V2 V01.05 SL231 section names VDS/N52, MSC/N53, ESP, ABC, body controllers and shift-module entries. In that reviewed section a dedicated transmission-reading row was not established; ISM is not the transmission ECU. The V3 SL231 reference explicitly names VGS4NAG2/722.9 TCM and separately names ADS. Neither reference guarantees every current SL400 build or status value.
| Task | Evidence reviewed | Purchase limit |
|---|---|---|
| Seven-speed automatic | V3 TCM VGS4NAG2/722.9; separate ISM | Confirm actual SL400 TCM and required data. Do not infer from V2 shift-module entry. |
| ABS / ESP | Separate ESP/N30/4 entries | Engine or TCM communication is not an ESP report. |
| Vario folding roof | VDS/N52 code/data entries | Ask for actual roof controller and needed inputs/status. |
| MAGIC SKY CONTROL | Separate MSC/N53 entries | Only if fitted; does not establish folding-mechanism health. |
| Body electronics | Front/rear SAM and door entries | Match the affected fitted module. |
| Suspension | V3 ADS/N51/5; V2 ABC/N51/2 | Match actual system; one does not certify the other. |
ADS and ABC are different suspension enquiries
The UK list separates standard sports suspension with ADS from optional ABC replacing that suspension. Do not request an ABC report merely because the car is an SL, or treat an ABC entry as evidence for ADS. Provide the actual equipment and ask for controller identity, complete faults/status and the particular available data needed. No calibration, hydraulic command or operating test is promised.
For a one-off roof or suspension complaint, compare an interpreted specialist report with buying a reader. For repeated confirmed tasks, LAUNCH Mercedes or a suitable Autel may be sensible alongside iCarsoft. The owner reports make LAUNCH worth investigating, while the reference lists expose questions to ask; none guarantees every value. A basic reader remains reasonable for a supported emissions-only task.
What can a basic OBD2 reader tell you?
On a compatible car, generic EOBD/OBD2 can provide supported emissions-related codes, readiness information, freeze-frame and engine data. Some transmission-related codes may appear through that route. It does not amount to a complete transmission, ABS/ESP, body, fitted roof or suspension report.
A compatible basic reader is a sensible choice for an isolated engine-emissions question. Pay for manufacturer-aware reading when the required controller or information lies outside that task.
Enhanced reading may add controller identification, its own fault descriptions/status and supported data. Record modules that could not communicate as well as those returning faults. “No faults”, “not fitted” and “cannot communicate” are different findings; none independently diagnoses an intermittent or mechanical problem.
Which scanner or scan is worth paying for?
| Route | When it can make sense | Confirm before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Compatible basic reader | Engine-emissions question only | Protocol and required reading functions. |
| LAUNCH Creader Elite for Mercedes | Repeated Mercedes controller reading | Exact generation, supplied Mercedes software and named module. |
| iCarsoft MB V2.0 / V3.0 | Repeated marque-specific reading | Exact build, named module, current software and complete interface. |
| LAUNCH CRP129 EVO V3 | Engine, transmission, ABS and SRS enquiries | Four-system scope; no roof/body/ADS inference. |
| LAUNCH CRP919S / Autel MD906 Pro | Several vehicles justify broader coverage | Exact controller, UK support and total setup/update cost. |
| Mercedes specialist report | One-off problem or unconfirmed access | Appropriate legitimate equipment and a written reading scope. |
The current LAUNCH Creader manufacturer page describes Mercedes-specific configurations and combines 2.0/3.0 products. An earlier regional Creader page describes a different generation. Confirm the actual unit, included brand licence and update arrangement. A marketplace title, family name or X431 branding does not establish identical coverage.
A Mercedes-specific LAUNCH reader is a credible candidate to investigate. Ask for the supplied hardware/software version, required controller reading, delivered UK price, return terms and any additional-brand charges. No purchase link or owner’s possession of a tool establishes its exact capabilities.
The iCarsoft V2 and V3 product pages describe standalone handhelds and free software updates. Obtain a current UK quote including required cables or adapters. A model listing and a reference PDF do not guarantee the present reading task; the two products need separate confirmation.
The official UK CRP129 EVO V3 page listed £346.80 including VAT with lifetime Wi-Fi updates on review. Its four-system scope can be useful after confirmation, but is not evidence for roof, body or suspension reading. The UK CRP919S page listed £514.80 including VAT with 24 months of updates. Ask what renewal costs and what remains usable afterwards.
Autel’s MD906 Pro documentation offers another reputable multi-system candidate and describes lifetime software updates for that product. Confirm the UK package, support, exact vehicle/controller and complete interface. Compare the delivered setup and future costs with a specialist’s report and interpretation. For one unresolved fault, the report may cost less and answer more.
What about legitimate Mercedes diagnostics?
Ask a Mercedes specialist which legitimately licensed equipment suits the chassis and required reading. Request controller identity, complete codes/status, relevant data and a list of modules that could not be read. A quotation for a “STAR scan” should state what information it includes.
The XENTRY Diagnosis Lite manual describes a commercial Windows setup, supplied hardware, 16-pin cable, contract, StartKey and time credits; the UK appears among eligible markets. Current eligibility, chassis support and total hardware/software/time-credit costs need confirming. Confirm chassis coverage, the complete supported interface and the actual vehicle connection.
The XENTRY Pass Thru EU FAQ limits eligibility to qualifying Euro 5/VI vehicles. Check the actual vehicle’s emissions certification and current eligibility; do not assume that every car in this guide qualifies. Also confirm the interface and required controller. Fitting within an eligible emissions class is not an exact-function guarantee. Copied-software bundles are not the legitimate alternative. For occasional use, a professional reading often avoids a disproportionate setup.

What to ask before buying or booking
Provide build date, engine, gearbox, body style, original market and fitted equipment. Where necessary, supply a VIN privately to a reputable supplier. Name the task: controller identity, full codes and status, and the particular data item needed. Obtain confirmation for the current unit, interface and database, plus return terms if the agreed reading is unavailable.
For brake, restraint, roof or suspension warnings, follow the handbook and obtain appropriate professional assessment. This guide provides no safety-critical repair, coding, programming, calibration, active-test, key or security-access procedure. An available menu does not establish that using it is safe or appropriate.
Common scanner questions
Does a more expensive tool guarantee a diagnosis?
No. It may obtain more information from supported controllers. Interpretation and electrical or mechanical investigation may still be necessary. A code is not an instruction to replace the named component.
Can I clear the warning and see whether it returns?
Preserve the original report and relevant operating circumstances first. Clearing can remove useful evidence and does not repair the cause. Do not use a cleared warning as reassurance about a safety-related system.
Is a service reminder the same as a diagnostic fault?
No. Maintenance reminders and fault information answer different questions. See the ASSYST explanation for wider context and use the maintenance system applicable to the actual build. This guide is not a reset procedure.
