Mercedes SLK320 R170 Service and Maintenance Guide

For a Mercedes SLK320 R170, combine the ASSYST reminder with the car’s dated service history. The V6 has important buying and quotation differences: NGK lists 12 spark plugs, MANN supplies its C 2861-2 air-filter reference as a two-element pack, and Mercedes specifies a separate two-year brake-fluid renewal.

Coverage: SLK320 R170.465 with the 3,199 cc M112.947 V6, listed by MANN at 160 kW / 218 hp. SLK230 Kompressor, SLK32 AMG and later R171 cars are separate applications.

Start with the correct SLK320

Check the model and engine details before comparing a kit or booking work. The SLK320’s M112.947 is a different application from the four-cylinder SLK230 and the supercharged SLK32 AMG. A listing that mentions several R170 models still needs to show the correct parts for your engine.

MANN’s catalogue gives 03/00–04/04 for the covered SLK320 application. Treat those as catalogue dates, rather than deciding fitment solely from the registration year. Confirm any replacement engine using its own details.

What does the ASSYST A or B reminder mean?

The inspected Mercedes manual calls the system ASSYST and distinguishes a smaller A service from a larger B service. It shows time or distance remaining, with the interval affected by driving conditions. An overdue reminder is shown with a minus sign.

Give the garage the complete display and mileage. Ask for the inspections and additional operations due on this car, using its applicable service documentation. Our general Service A and Service B guides explain the wider labels.

A reminder does not tell you when the previous owner last changed the plugs or cabin filter. Nor does a reset prove that those jobs were completed. Keep the invoice and service-record entry together after the work.

Three SLK320 checks that make quotations clearer

1. Spark plugs: compare the complete 12-plug job

NGK’s UK catalogue lists 12 plugs for the M112.947 SLK320. Check whether a quotation includes all 12 and whether a retail pack contains one plug, six or the complete requirement. Do not assume six cylinders means a six-plug purchase.

The SLK320 filters and spark-plugs guide gives the exact manufacturer reference. Establish whether renewal is due from the applicable schedule and dated history; the quantity alone does not create an interval.

2. Engine air filters: check the supplied pair

MANN identifies C 2861-2 for this application and states that the product contains two elements. Ask whether a proposed air-filter renewal includes the complete matching pack. Cabin filtration is a different item and should appear separately on the invoice.

3. Brake fluid: keep the renewal date

The reviewed Mercedes manual instructs renewal every two years. Check for an actual change date, rather than accepting a brake-fluid level check as evidence of renewal. Ask the workshop to reconcile the next due date with the service records.

Build a useful maintenance record

ItemWhat to record
Engine oil and filterDate, mileage, exact oil, MB approval and complete filter reference.
Engine air filtersComplete reference and evidence of the paired-element renewal.
Cabin filterNamed cabin-filter job, reference and date.
Spark plugsReference, quantity fitted and renewal date/mileage.
Brake fluidActual renewal date and next due date.
Transmission and coolantGearbox identity and any separate fluid-service records.

If invoices are missing, ask the garage to explain which jobs establish a sensible baseline, which follow the documented schedule and which address an observed defect. This produces a more useful comparison than two differently defined “full service” prices.

Stored cars and disconnected batteries

The manual says ASSYST does not count time with the battery disconnected. Keep any storage dates and give them to the workshop. A countdown alone can therefore miss elapsed time relevant to the next appointment.

List separate symptoms when booking: poor starting, rough running, a leak, gearbox behaviour or a roof problem. Agree diagnostic work clearly alongside routine maintenance rather than assuming one service package resolves every complaint.

Before authorising the work

  • Confirm the model, engine, gearbox, mileage and full reminder.
  • Supply itemised invoices and relevant storage dates.
  • Ask for the oil approval, complete filter references and plug quantity.
  • Separate scheduled work, missing-history recommendations and fault diagnosis.
  • Check labour, parts, VAT and the service-record update are clear.

The SLK320 oil capacity and approvals guide explains the verified change quantity and current named oil option. If comparing ownership with the four-cylinder car, use the separate SLK230 maintenance guide for its engine-specific details.
