The E55 AMG needs separate gearbox, brake, suspension and body enquiries. A compatible emissions reader can answer some engine-warning questions, but an engine scan does not establish what SBC, ESP or AIRMATIC has recorded. The saloon and estate also need their fitted equipment checked separately.
Which UK E55 AMG is covered?
This guide covers the pre-facelift W211 saloon and S211 estate with supercharged 5,439cc V8 and five-speed AMG automatic. The Mercedes club technical reference identifies the engine capacity. The manufacturer’s W211 history dates the saloon’s global debut to autumn 2002; the manufacturer-origin estate launch release from July 2003 documents the estate’s five-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT, SBC and AMG AIRMATIC DC.
| Body | Selected powertrain | Equipment distinction |
|---|---|---|
| W211 E55 saloon | Supercharged V8; five-speed automatic | Confirm original build and actual fitted equipment. |
| S211 E55 estate | Supercharged V8; five-speed automatic | Powered tailgate/loading-floor equipment is a separate enquiry where fitted. |
The working UK branch is approximately 2003–06. Mercedes’ historical UK saloon and UK estate lists independently record the E55. Their availability periods are not first/last production dates. The June 2006 UK facelift list instead lists E63 AMG. Do not treat a later registration as proof of a facelift E55. This guide excludes the earlier W210 E55, facelift E63, other engines, imports, suspension conversions and materially modified systems.
What E55 owners actually ask
A UK S211 E55 owner reports a firm ride, intermittent suspension warning and several body-related codes. The opening calls its reader “basic”, but does not establish its exact product or diagnostic mode. That description is not evidence that generic emissions OBD2 reads AIRMATIC or body modules. The useful request is a complete report identifying the controllers and supported fault status.
A 2005 E55 owner asks how to interpret stored air-suspension codes while the ride height appears normal. The car has an aftermarket lowering module, outside the standard scope here. It illustrates why code age/status, circumstances and modifications matter; it does not establish a stock failure pattern or justify ignoring a warning.

What controller access is documented?
The V2 E-Class211 reference distinguishes up to May 2005, June 2005–May 2006 and later branches. The V3 E211 reference also separates the early branches. Match actual build and ECU identity rather than selecting a later menu because it communicates with something. These generation lists include other engines and equipment; they are not exact E55 certificates.
| Reading task | Documentary lead | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Supercharged engine | V2 ME-SFI 2.8; V3 broad ME entries | Confirm actual engine ECU and relevant faults/data. |
| Five-speed automatic | V2 ETC / V3 TCM; selector ESM separate | Require actual transmission ECU, not selector alone. |
| Brakes | SBC and ESP separately named | Confirm both reporting systems; no brake-service promise. |
| Air suspension | V2 explicit AIRmatic; V3 generic Suspension | V3 label alone does not identify exact air/damping controller. |
| Body | SAM, doors and Parktronic entries | Affected fitted module and specific reading required. |
| Estate equipment | V3 rear-end door/closing and loading-floor entries | Only relevant if fitted; no all-estate guarantee. |
| Glass roof | OCP overhead-panel entry | Dedicated roof status reading not established here. |
Why AIRMATIC and estate equipment need precise questions
The estate launch document describes full AMG AIRMATIC DC, rather than merely a general estate self-levelling description. Identify the actual installation and any conversion on either body. A suspension report may add faults/status and supported information that an engine reader misses. It cannot certify air springs, leaks, dampers or mechanical condition. The V2 explicit air label is a useful purchasing lead, not proof that every height or pressure value is available.
Likewise, an optional powered estate tailgate is not a convertible roof, and a loading-floor module is not the tailgate controller. A body-system headline does not establish each one. If a one-off equipment complaint has uncertain reader coverage, an interpreted specialist scan can be better value.
SBC reading does not authorise SBC servicing
Ask separately for SBC and ESP identification, complete faults/status and the relevant available data. A warning or code is not a replacement-parts instruction. No counter reset, deactivation, bleeding, operating test or safety-critical repair is given here. Follow the vehicle handbook for brake warnings and arrange appropriate professional assessment.
E55 scanner questions
Does later E63 coverage establish E55 support?
No. The powertrain and braking enquiry differ. Select the actual E55 five-speed and SBC-equipped build, and confirm each requested controller.
Does normal height rule out a suspension problem?
No. Nor does a stored code alone prove a component has failed. Preserve the report and seek interpretation of the relevant status and symptoms.
What can a basic OBD2 reader tell you?
On a compatible vehicle, generic EOBD/OBD2 can retrieve supported emissions-related codes, readiness, freeze-frame and engine data. Some transmission-related codes may appear there. This is a useful first step for an isolated engine-emissions question. It is not a complete scan of the transmission, ABS/ESP, body, roof or suspension controllers.
Manufacturer-aware reading can add the named controller’s identification, complete fault descriptions/status and supported live information. This matters when a basic reader returns no engine codes while another system displays a warning. “No faults”, “not fitted” and “cannot communicate” are different results. Keep those distinctions in the saved report.
Which scanner or scan is worth paying for?
| Route | When it makes sense | Confirm first |
|---|---|---|
| Compatible basic reader | Supported engine-emissions question | Required codes/data and protocol. |
| LAUNCH Creader Elite Mercedes | Repeated named Mercedes reading | Actual hardware generation, supplied software and controller. |
| iCarsoft MB V2.0 / V3.0 | Repeated marque-specific tasks | Separate current build/module evidence for each product. |
| LAUNCH CRP129 EVO V3 | Confirmed engine, gearbox, ABS or SRS reading | Four-system scope does not establish body, roof or suspension. |
| LAUNCH CRP919S / Autel MD906 Pro | Broader repeated or multi-car tasks | Exact coverage and total UK cost. |
| Specialist scan and interpretation | One unresolved or unconfirmed task | Named controller, complete report and explanation. |
The LAUNCH manufacturer Creader page covers different configurations. Confirm the exact Mercedes unit, included software, delivered price and update terms. The earlier regional Creader documentation is a different-generation reference. A shared family name or marketplace title does not prove identical coverage.
The iCarsoft V2 and V3 product documentation describe standalone readers and free updates. Obtain a current delivered UK quote and specific module confirmation. The reference lists above are useful evidence, but do not make iCarsoft the automatic choice. Autel MD906 Pro documentation describes another multi-system candidate with lifetime updates; confirm its exact UK package and task.
On 23 October 2026 the official UK CRP129 EVO V3 listing showed £346.80 including VAT and lifetime Wi-Fi updates. The CRP919S listing showed £514.80 including VAT and 24 months of updates. Recheck prices, renewal costs, retained functions and support before buying. Broader marketing does not certify this exact vehicle’s controllers.
Compare the complete cost: unit, required brand licence, cables/interface, delivery, updates and support. Ask what remains usable after any update term ends. If one specialist visit can provide the necessary information and interpretation for less, buying a more expensive reader may offer little benefit. No scanner ownership or hands-on testing claim is made here.
What about legitimate Mercedes diagnostics?
Ask a Mercedes specialist which legitimately licensed system suits the actual car and requested reading. A quotation described as a STAR scan should identify what the report includes. Request controller identity, full codes/status, relevant available data and modules that could not communicate.
The XENTRY Diagnosis Lite manual describes a commercial Windows setup with interface, contract, StartKey and time credits. Confirm current UK eligibility, chassis coverage and total costs. The XENTRY Pass Thru EU FAQ limits vehicle eligibility to qualifying Euro5/VI applications; eligibility for this older scoped car is not established here. Exact certification, interface and required module still matter. A connector or a Mercedes badge alone does not settle eligibility.
For occasional owner use, professional diagnosis can avoid the cost and maintenance of a complete legitimate setup. Copied-software bundles are not the legitimate alternative. This guide makes no promise of coding, programming, calibration, active tests, key programming or security access.

What to ask before buying or booking
Provide original market, build date, engine, gearbox, body and fitted equipment. Supply a VIN privately to a reputable supplier if needed. Name the controller and the specific codes, status or data you require. Obtain confirmation for the current hardware, firmware, vehicle database and complete interface, plus return terms if the agreed reading is unavailable.
Preserve the full original scan and circumstances before clearing anything. Fault information guides an investigation; it is not a parts order. For brake, restraint, roof or suspension warnings follow the vehicle handbook and seek appropriate professional assessment. No safety-critical repair procedure is given here.
Common scanner questions
Does a more expensive scanner guarantee the answer?
No. It may retrieve more information from supported modules. Intermittent wiring, power supply and mechanical concerns can still require assessment. Buy for the information needed, not a headline function count.
Can a service reset diagnose a warning?
No. A maintenance reminder and a diagnostic fault answer different questions. See the ASSYST explanation for context, using the system applicable to your actual car. This guide is not a reset procedure.
