UNUSUAL CARS MODEL GUIDE
The Hyundai i20 N was one of the last great small petrol hot hatches sold in Britain. Launched here in July 2021, it combined a 204 PS 1.6-litre turbo engine, six-speed manual gearbox and mechanical limited-slip differential in a light five-door body.

Born from the N division
After the i30 N proved Hyundai could build a serious European hot hatch, the smaller i20 N applied the same philosophy at supermini scale. It shared its basic body with the third-generation i20 but received extensive structural, powertrain, suspension, braking and electronic changes.
Hyundai connected the car to its World Rally Championship programme in presentation and attitude, but the road car was engineered as an everyday five-door with a usable boot and full warranty. UK orders opened on 16 July 2021.

Engine, gearbox and differential
The 1,598cc T-GDi engine produced 204 PS and 275 Nm, sent through a reinforced six-speed manual gearbox. A mechanical N Corner Carving Differential distributed torque across the front axle. Launch control, rev matching and selectable N modes were standard.

Chassis and UK equipment
The shell received extra bracing, while springs, dampers, geometry, brakes and steering were reworked for N duty. UK cars arrived in a single high specification with 18-inch wheels, Pirelli P Zero tyres developed for the model, sports seats, heated steering wheel, digital instruments, navigation and a selectable active exhaust.

Why it matters
At launch the i20 N competed directly with the Ford Fiesta ST. Its combination of low weight, manual gearbox, limited-slip differential and adjustable driving modes made it unusually focused for the price. When Hyundai ended European production of petrol N models in the first half of 2024, the i20 N’s brief three-year UK career was fixed in history.

Hyundai i20 N buying guide
Service history and warranty
Verify annual servicing, correct oil and completion of recalls or software campaigns. Cars may still have manufacturer warranty depending on age and mileage, but modifications, missed services and track use can affect claims.
Clutch, gearbox and differential
The clutch should engage smoothly and hold full torque. Test every gear when cold and warm, listen for differential noise and ensure rev matching, launch control and drive modes work correctly.
Tyres, brakes and geometry
Matching correct-specification tyres are important to the chassis. Examine front shoulders, wheels, brake discs and pads, then check for pulling or an off-centre steering wheel. Track use is acceptable only when paired with excellent maintenance.
Body and electronics
Inspect the low front bumper, sills, wheels and underbody for kerb damage. Test navigation, digital instruments, driver-assistance functions, exhaust modes, climate control and both keys. A professional diagnostic scan is worthwhile.
