Mercedes CLK280 / CLK350 Oil Capacity: 8.0 Litres & Approvals

The Mercedes handbook gives both the CLK280 and CLK350 an 8.0-litre oil-change amount including the filter. The inspected European table lists MB 229.3 / 229.5 for the two models. Mobil 1 FS 0W-40 is a named buying option carrying both approvals, where its SAE grade matches your car’s requirements.

Coverage: CLK280 C209 coupé / A209 cabriolet with M272.940 3.0-litre V6, and CLK350 with M272.960 3.5-litre V6. Mercedes lists 170 kW / 231 hp and 200 kW / 272 hp respectively. These are petrol models; the older M112 CLK320 and OM642 CLK320 CDI have separate guides.

Oil capacity and approvals at a glance

ModelEngine with filterEuropean handbook approvals
CLK280 M272.9408.0 litres229.3 / 229.5
CLK350 M272.9608.0 litres229.3 / 229.5

The European manual explicitly groups the two model names in these rows. Separately, the official Mercedes-hosted 2008 CLK350 manual gives 8.5 US quarts / 8.0 litres for engine with oil filter. That is corroboration for the CLK350, not a reason to apply every North American service instruction to a UK car.

Which oil can I buy?

Mobil’s current UK page lists MB-Approval 229.3 and 229.5 for Mobil 1 FS 0W-40. Check the permitted viscosity in your handbook, then compare the exact product name, approval and quantity on the individual listing.

Search Amazon for Mobil 1 FS 0W-40

The search may return other oils or pack sizes. “Mobil 1” alone does not identify the FS 0W-40 formulation. Keep the required approval in view rather than selecting solely by price or the Mercedes badge.

How much oil should I order?

Example purchaseTotal oilBuying point
5 litres plus 3 litres8 litresMatches the documented amount if those pack sizes are available.
Two 5-litre containers10 litresCovers the change with spare oil; do not add all 10 litres.
One 5-litre container5 litresInsufficient for the documented full change.
A six- or seven-litre kit6 or 7 litresCheck the shortfall against the 8.0-litre handbook reference.

Compare the delivered cost of enough oil for the job. The amount bought is not an instruction to pour it all in: residual oil and the work performed affect the refill, and the final level must be checked correctly. A top-up is a separate task from a full change.

Approval and viscosity are separate checks

The MB number identifies the approval; 0W-40 describes viscosity. Match both. The European table has a separate SAE XW-40 restriction attached to the CLK63 AMG column; it should not be copied across as an exclusive rule for the CLK280 or CLK350.

The table also lists different information for the CLK200 Kompressor and the diesels. A recommendation for another CLK engine is not a substitute for the named M272 rows.

Checking the oil level

The inspected European handbook specifies level ground, at least five minutes with the engine stopped after reaching operating temperature, or at least 30 minutes if it was started only briefly from cold. Follow the full procedure in your own handbook and keep the reading between the marked limits.

An oil-level check establishes what is in the engine now. The 8.0-litre figure is the documented change quantity with a filter, not the quantity needed whenever a dashboard message appears.

Oil filter and the rest of the service

MANN lists HU 718/5 x for both covered M272 applications. Our filters and spark-plugs guide covers the full reference, air filters, cabin-equipment branches and six-plug application. Use the servicing and UK-cost guide to plan the complete visit and keep records of the oil and parts fitted.

Sources and applicability

Checked 24 October 2026. The 2008 European manual used here is a Mercedes-origin French document, edition ÄJ 2008/1 b, mirrored by Fichier-PDF; its introductory notice specifies German-market applicability. The Mercedes-hosted CLK350 manual is a North American edition. Figures are attributed to those editions; match the handbook and service information supplied for your car.
