Choose a CLS63 scanner for the original powertrain and its AMG suspension report, not a broad CLS badge. A basic reader may answer an initial engine-warning question. Rear-height, damping, transmission and body complaints require separate access enquiries.
Which UK CLS63 AMG C218 is covered?
This guide covers the original standard 525PS C218 four-door coupé with the direct-injection 5,461cc biturbo V8 and seven-speed AMG MCT. The Mercedes UK price list effective 1 October 2012 documents it separately from the 557PS Shooting Brake. Its AMG section specifies adjustable damping and rear air suspension with self levelling. Identify the actual original equipment, including any glass roof.
| Branch | Scope decision | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Original 525PS C218 coupé | Included | Standard original UK biturbo/MCT specification. |
| 557PS X218 Shooting Brake | Excluded | Different body and documented power specification. |
| Later 557PS / S / 4MATIC / facelift | Excluded | Later power and equipment branches need separate evidence. |
The working branch is broadly 2011 to early 2013, controlled by original 525PS specification rather than registration. The UK June 2012 price list corroborates this original combination. The 2014 exterior facelift is not the only relevant boundary: a pre-facelift appearance does not establish original power specification. Exact first/last UK build days are not asserted.
Performance Package cars, special editions, older naturally aspirated C219 models, imports, air-suspension conversions, lowering changes and materially modified systems are excluded. AMG Sport trim on an ordinary CLS is not a CLS63. Do not carry over another CLS’s engine, body or optional-suspension assumptions.
What original CLS63 owners actually ask
A 2012 CLS63 owner with a stock car asks about low rear suspension and whether air springs, the pump or suspension management are involved. Those are questions, not confirmed failures. The car’s market is not established. Its later discussion of conversions is outside this standard-equipment guide; neither conversion nor parts replacement is recommended here.
Another 2012 CLS63 owner asks about a harsh ride with stock suspension components. A scan may reveal supported damping-controller information, but it cannot certify joints, tyres, mounts or every damper’s physical condition. A noise or rough ride without codes may still require inspection. The discussion is not evidence of a UK failure rate.

The V2 and V3 suspension evidence differs
The V2 CLS218 reference lists engine families including MED17.7, ETC transmission, ESP, SAM, door and panoramic-roof entries. A separate AIRMATIC diagnostic row was not established in that reviewed CLS218 section. The V3 CLS218 reference explicitly names AIRMATIC N51/3 alongside generic ME, TCM, ESP, sliding roof, body and AMG Drive Unit.
| Task | Documentary lead | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Biturbo engine | V2 direct-injection family; V3 generic ME | Not exact original-CLS63 ECU certification. |
| MCT transmission | V2 ETC / V3 TCM | Selector and AMG Drive Unit are separate. |
| ABS / ESP | Explicit ESP entries | Brake/stability access must be confirmed independently. |
| AMG rear air / damping | Explicit V3 AIRMATIC N51/3 | No transfer to V2; exact AMG data still unconfirmed. |
| Body electronics | SAM and door controllers | Actual fitted controller and reading task. |
| Glass roof | V2 PSD / V3 SD | Fitment and exact roof information required. |
This is a documentation distinction, not a finding that every current V2 cannot communicate. Ask the supplier for current original-CLS63 evidence. A V3 family row is a stronger lead for this particular suspension enquiry, but it does not guarantee all AMG damping values or make V3 the automatic purchase.
What Mercedes-aware diagnostics add here
For a rear-height warning, a confirmed suspension report may provide faults/status and selected available readings beyond emissions OBD2. For a damping complaint, identify the particular controller and information needed rather than accepting “AIRMATIC supported”. The rear-air description must not be turned into a four-corner-air claim or confused with hydraulic ABC.
For MCT, request transmission identity and complete codes/status separately from the selector and Drive Unit. For body or roof concerns, specify the actual module. This coupé has no folding convertible roof; an overhead-panel or sunroof entry says nothing about cabriolet coverage. Fault information directs further assessment and cannot prove the mechanical system is sound.
Original CLS63 scanner questions
Can the Shooting Brake share this recommendation?
Do not assume it. Its body, power specification and fitted systems require their own assessment even where a chassis-family menu is shared.
Should I buy a tool just because it says AMG?
No. Match the original 525PS car and required controller. A specialist scan with interpretation can be better value for an isolated suspension or MCT concern.
Generic OBD2 versus Mercedes-aware diagnostics
A compatible basic EOBD/OBD2 reader can retrieve supported emissions-related engine codes, readiness and available standard data. That can be enough to record an engine warning before deciding the next step. It does not promise MCT, ABS/ESP, body, roof or suspension communication. A useful engine result and a complete vehicle report are different purchases.
A Mercedes-aware reader can add access to separately supported control units, their complete fault descriptions/status and relevant available data. The advantage is the extra information, not a guaranteed repair. Confirm every required module on the actual build, with the current hardware, vehicle database, software and interface. Archived model lists are leads for that enquiry, not exact current coverage certificates.
Which scanner route makes sense?
| Route | When it may suit | Check before paying |
|---|---|---|
| Basic compatible reader | Initial emissions-related engine question | Required protocol and information; no non-engine promise. |
| LAUNCH Mercedes Creader / Creader Elite | Repeated owner reading on one Mercedes | Exact model/configuration, included Mercedes software and individual modules. |
| iCarsoft MB V2 or V3 | Standalone Mercedes-focused reading | Use the correct version’s evidence; obtain current exact-task confirmation. |
| LAUNCH CRP129 EVO V3 / CRP919S | Broader repeat or multi-car reading | Exact controller access and total package/update cost. |
| Autel MD906 Pro | Another multi-system candidate | Current UK package, coverage and update terms. |
| Mercedes specialist | One unresolved or uncertain task | Interpreted report from the actual named controllers. |
The LAUNCH manufacturer Creader page describes different configurations; the earlier regional documentation is a separate reference. Confirm the exact Mercedes unit, software, delivered price and update terms. A marketplace family name or the fact that another owner used LAUNCH does not certify a particular reading task.
The iCarsoft V2 and V3 product pages describe Mercedes-focused tools and update arrangements. Their different reference findings matter, and the brand is not a default recommendation. Autel’s MD906 Pro documentation provides another candidate. Obtain a current UK quote, agreed controller coverage and return terms rather than buying by headline system counts.
Reviewed on 24 October 2026, the official UK CRP129 EVO V3 listing showed £346.80 including VAT with lifetime Wi-Fi updates; the CRP919S listing showed £514.80 including VAT with 24 months of updates. Neither price establishes exact coverage for this vehicle. Recheck the hardware package, what remains usable after the update period and any renewal charge.
Compare unit price, brand licence, required cables/interface, delivery, updates and support. A lower-cost basic reader is sensible where it supplies the only information needed. A specialist visit may be better value than a higher-priced unit with unconfirmed access. No scanner ownership or hands-on testing claim is made.
What about legitimate Mercedes diagnostics?
Ask a Mercedes specialist which legitimately licensed diagnostic system fits the actual build and requested report. A quotation for a STAR scan should identify controller coverage, full codes/status, relevant available data and any modules that did not communicate. Interpretation is part of the value.
The XENTRY Diagnosis Lite manual describes a commercial Windows setup involving an interface, contract, StartKey and time credits. This passenger-car route still needs exact vehicle and module eligibility checks. Confirm current UK access, supported interface, subscriptions and total setup cost; a diagnostic socket alone is insufficient. Occasional owner use may favour a specialist over maintaining that setup.

What to ask before buying or booking
Provide original market, build date, engine, gearbox, body and fitted equipment. Supply a VIN privately to a reputable supplier where needed. Name the required controller and specific codes, status or data item. Ask for confirmation against current hardware, software, database and complete interface, with return terms if the agreed reading is unavailable.
Preserve the complete original report and circumstances before clearing anything. Codes are evidence for an investigation, not instructions to replace parts. For brake, restraint, roof or suspension warnings follow the handbook and obtain appropriate professional assessment. Unsupported coding, programming, calibration, active-test and security-access claims are excluded.
Common scanner questions
Does paying more guarantee a diagnosis?
No. More supported information can help, but electrical, mechanical and intermittent faults may need further assessment. A clean scan cannot certify physical condition.
Is a service reminder a diagnostic fault?
No. See the ASSYST explanation for context, using the maintenance system fitted to the actual car. This is not a reset procedure.

Sources and limitations
Research reviewed: 24 October 2026. Documentary research supports this guide. Unusual Cars has not independently tested the vehicles, scanners or functions. Owner discussions establish questions and reported experiences, not verified diagnoses, repairs, failure rates or universal coverage. Exact functions vary by vehicle build, module, software, interface and tool version.
Sources are linked beside the relevant claims. Check reference findings against current compatibility information and actual equipment. Manufacturer-origin archived text supports period specification; its dates do not establish exact UK build cutoffs. Product documentation, UK costs and commercial destinations were checked on the review date and can change. Confirm current coverage for the actual vehicle and required controller before purchase.
