The 2008 Mercedes E-Class handbook lists 8.0 litres for an oil change including the filter on the named E280 and E350 petrol models. Their oil table gives MB 229.3 / 229.5. Mobil 1 FS 0W-40 is a named buying option carrying both approvals, where the SAE grade matches your handbook requirements.
Coverage: conventional petrol E280 W211 saloon / S211 estate with M272.943 3.0-litre V6 (170 kW / 231 hp), and E350 with M272.964 3.5-litre V6 (200 kW / 272 hp). CGI, 4MATIC and diesel versions are outside this guide’s combined application.
Capacity and approval at a glance
| Covered petrol model | Handbook oil change with filter | MB sheet numbers |
|---|---|---|
| E280, M272.943 | 8.0 litres | 229.3 / 229.5 |
| E350, M272.964 | 8.0 litres | 229.3 / 229.5 |
The quantity comes from the handbook’s named-model oil table. It is a change quantity with the filter, not the amount to add whenever the level is low.
Which oil can I buy?
Mobil’s current UK product page lists MB-Approval 229.3 and 229.5 for Mobil 1 FS 0W-40. Compare the exact product name, actual approval and permitted viscosity before ordering.

Search Amazon for Mobil 1 FS 0W-40The search can return other Mobil formulations and different container sizes. Keep “FS 0W-40” and the required MB Approval in view; the Mobil 1 name alone does not identify the product.
How much oil should I order?
| Purchase example | Total oil | Buying consequence |
|---|---|---|
| 5 litres plus 3 litres | 8 litres | Matches the documented quantity if those sizes are available. |
| Two 5-litre containers | 10 litres | Enough for the reference amount with oil left over; do not add all ten litres. |
| One 5-litre container | 5 litres | Three litres below the documented full-change quantity. |
| A six- or seven-litre kit | 6 or 7 litres | Check the shortfall before treating it as a complete supply. |
Compare the delivered price of enough approved oil for the job. If a garage supplies the oil, confirm that before buying a separate supply. Parts-bundle prices can look attractive while including less oil than the documented change requires.
The amount bought is not a fixed pouring instruction. Residual oil and the work performed affect the refill; establish the final level using the car’s handbook procedure. A top-up and a full oil change are different tasks.
Keep petrol, CDI and generation details separate
An E280 or E350 search can mix petrol and diesel results. The inspected manual has separate petrol and diesel tables, including different approval information. Use the petrol model row and the full engine identity rather than importing a diesel recommendation.
It also lists other E-Class engines in different capacity groups. A figure for an E200 Kompressor, E500 or later W212 does not establish the amount for these M272 applications.
CGI and 4MATIC require their own parts and application checks. Although the handbook groups some named variants together for oil, that does not automatically extend this guide’s spark-plug and filter coverage to them.
Approval and viscosity answer different questions
The MB number identifies the approval; 0W-40 describes viscosity. Match both to the vehicle requirements. Mobil explicitly lists the approvals used for this comparison, so the recommendation does not rest on a general “suitable for Mercedes” description.
The handbook’s separate XW-40 footnote is attached to the AMG column. It should not be copied across as an exclusive AMG-derived rule for the E280 or E350.
Oil filter and service records
MANN lists HU 718/5 x for the covered petrol engines. The filter and spark-plug buying guide covers the complete reference, engine air filtration, right-hand-drive cabin filter and six-plug application.
Use the servicing and UK-cost guide to plan the wider visit. Keep the full oil product, approval, filter reference, date and mileage with the invoice. The dashboard reminder tells you about servicing; it does not replace an oil-level check.
