An early R231 SL63 needs separate MCT, ABC, folding-roof and roof-glass enquiries. The roof mechanism and optional tint-control glass are different systems. A broad SL listing, or a recommendation for the earlier naturally aspirated SL63, does not establish access to this biturbo car.
Which early UK SL63 AMG R231 is covered?
This guide covers the original standard 537PS SL63 AMG R231: a 5,461cc direct-injection biturbo V8 with seven-speed AMG MCT. The Mercedes UK 2014 SL brochure specifies this combination and AMG sports suspension based on ABC. It separately describes the panoramic glass Vario roof and optional MAGIC SKY CONTROL.
| Included branch | Scope boundary | Separate enquiries |
|---|---|---|
| Early standard 537PS R231 SL63 | Original power specification from the 2012 introduction | MCT, ABC, ESP, Vario roof, body and fitted glass control. |
| Excluded variants | 564PS Performance Package, performance suspension and later power/facelift cars | Do not identify by pre-facelift appearance alone. |
The working branch begins with the 2012 generation and is anchored to documented original-power UK specification. This does not cover every pre-facelift R231: later power revisions need separate assessment. Actual build and original configuration govern; the brochure year and a registration year are not exact factory cutoffs. SL65, R230/R232, imports, conversions and materially modified systems are excluded.
What early R231 SL63 owners actually ask
A 2013 SL63 owner reports the roof sequence stopping before the boot lid closes and asks about obtaining a STAR scan. The opening does not establish the market, power package or cause. It identifies a useful body-system reading task; it does not prove a switch failure or justify reproducing operating workarounds.
Another 2013 SL63 owner asks about ABC and roof/boot hydraulic maintenance after sluggish boot opening in cold weather. That is a reason to distinguish the affected mechanism and requested report, not to assume a fluid change or one common fault will solve it. The account is not evidence of a UK service interval. Hydraulic procedures and forum repair suggestions are excluded from this guide.

The suspension and transmission references differ
The V2 SL231 reference explicitly names ABC N51/2, ESP, VDS roof N52 and MSC N53 alongside direct-injection engine electronics. A separate transmission-reading row was not established in the reviewed SL231 section. A reset table elsewhere cannot fill that evidence gap.
The V3 SL231 reference explicitly names the M157 engine and VGS4NAG2 transmission controller, plus ESP, VDS and MSC. Its suspension entry is ADS N51/5; a separately named ABC row was not established there. ADS is not a sufficient certificate for the AMG ABC reading required. These are documentation limits, not a claim that every current installation cannot communicate.
| Reading task | Separate documentary finding | Buying implication |
|---|---|---|
| M157 biturbo engine | V3 explicitly names M157; V2 direct-injection family | Confirm actual ECU and needed information. |
| MCT gearbox | Explicit V3 VGS4NAG2 TCM; no separate V2 SL231 row established | Confirm actual MCT variant and full report. |
| ABC hydraulic suspension | Explicit V2 ABC; V3 ADS wording differs | Do not transfer ABC support between versions. |
| ABS / ESP | Explicit ESP entries | Independent brake/stability access. |
| Vario folding roof | VDS N52 in both references | Particular faults/status data still need confirmation. |
| Optional tint-control glass | MSC N53 in both references | Not proof of roof-mechanism or every glass value. |
| Body / comfort | SAM, doors and AIRSCARF separate | Match the affected fitted module. |
Which extra reports are worth paying for?
For a roof sequence concern, confirmed VDS faults and available inputs/status can show what the controller recorded when movement stopped. They do not certify cylinders, seals, hinges or every latch. A report from MSC concerns the optional glass; AIRSCARF concerns a separate comfort system. Neither replaces roof-mechanism access.
For an ABC warning, specify hydraulic ABC identity, complete codes/status and particular required data before buying. Do not substitute a broad ADS label. For a shift complaint, request the actual MCT report separately from selector or AMG Drive Unit information. An interpreted specialist scan is a sensible alternative where one owner tool cannot be confirmed for both tasks.
Early SL63 scanner questions
Is ABC optional on this scoped AMG?
The UK AMG specification identifies suspension based on ABC. The brochure’s ordinary SL350/SL500 optional-ABC wording must not be applied to the SL63 equipment section.
Can I assume every glass-roof SL has MAGIC SKY CONTROL?
No. Identify the fitted glass and original option specification. A panoramic glass panel and electronically controlled tint are different enquiries.
Generic OBD2 versus Mercedes-aware diagnostics
A compatible basic EOBD/OBD2 reader can retrieve supported emissions-related engine codes, readiness and available standard data. That can be enough to record an engine warning before deciding the next step. It does not promise transmission, ABS/ESP, body, roof or suspension communication. A useful engine result and a complete vehicle report are different purchases.
A Mercedes-aware reader can add access to separately supported control units, their complete fault descriptions/status and relevant available data. The advantage is the extra information, not a guaranteed repair. Confirm every required module on the actual build, with the current hardware, vehicle database, software and interface. Archived model lists are leads for that enquiry, not exact current coverage certificates.
Which scanner route makes sense?
| Route | When it may suit | Check before paying |
|---|---|---|
| Basic compatible reader | Initial emissions-related engine question | Required protocol and information; no non-engine promise. |
| LAUNCH Mercedes Creader / Creader Elite | Repeated owner reading on one Mercedes | Exact model/configuration, included Mercedes software and individual modules. |
| iCarsoft MB V2 or V3 | Standalone Mercedes-focused reading | Use the correct version’s evidence; obtain current exact-task confirmation. |
| LAUNCH CRP129 EVO V3 / CRP919S | Broader repeat or multi-car reading | Exact controller access and total package/update cost. |
| Autel MD906 Pro | Another multi-system candidate | Current UK package, coverage and update terms. |
| Mercedes specialist | One unresolved or uncertain task | Interpreted report from the actual named controllers. |
The LAUNCH manufacturer Creader page describes different configurations; the earlier regional documentation is a separate reference. Confirm the exact Mercedes unit, software, delivered price and update terms. A marketplace family name does not certify a particular reading task.
The iCarsoft V2 and V3 product pages describe Mercedes-focused tools and update arrangements. Their different reference findings matter, and the brand is not a default recommendation. Autel’s MD906 Pro documentation provides another candidate. Obtain a current UK quote, agreed controller coverage and return terms rather than buying by headline system counts.
Reviewed on 24 October 2026, the official UK CRP129 EVO V3 listing showed £346.80 including VAT with lifetime Wi-Fi updates; the CRP919S listing showed £514.80 including VAT with 24 months of updates. Neither price establishes exact coverage for this vehicle. Recheck the hardware package, what remains usable after the update period and any renewal charge.
Compare unit price, brand licence, required cables/interface, delivery, updates and support. A lower-cost basic reader is sensible where it supplies the only information needed. A specialist visit may be better value than a higher-priced unit with unconfirmed access. No scanner ownership or hands-on testing claim is made.
What about legitimate Mercedes diagnostics?
Ask a Mercedes specialist which legitimately licensed diagnostic system fits the actual build and requested report. A quotation for a STAR scan should identify controller coverage, full codes/status, relevant available data and any modules that did not communicate. Interpretation is part of the value.
The XENTRY Diagnosis Lite manual describes a commercial Windows setup involving an interface, contract, StartKey and time credits. Confirm eligibility for the actual passenger-car build and required controller before investing in this setup. Confirm current UK access, supported interface, subscriptions and total setup cost; a diagnostic socket alone is insufficient. Occasional owner use may favour a specialist over maintaining that setup.

What to ask before buying or booking
Provide original market, build date, engine, gearbox, body and fitted equipment. Supply a VIN privately to a reputable supplier where needed. Name the required controller and specific codes, status or data item. Ask for confirmation against current hardware, software, database and complete interface, with return terms if the agreed reading is unavailable.
Preserve the complete original report and circumstances before clearing anything. Codes are evidence for an investigation, not instructions to replace parts. For brake, restraint, roof or suspension warnings follow the handbook and obtain appropriate professional assessment. Unsupported coding, programming, calibration, active-test and security-access claims are excluded.
Common scanner questions
Does paying more guarantee a diagnosis?
No. More supported information can help, but electrical, mechanical and intermittent faults may need further assessment. A clean scan cannot certify physical condition.
Is a service reminder a diagnostic fault?
No. See the ASSYST explanation for context, using the maintenance system fitted to the actual car. This is not a reset procedure.

Sources and limitations
Research reviewed: 24 October 2026. Documentary research supports this guide. Unusual Cars has not independently tested the vehicles, scanners or functions. Owner discussions establish questions and reported experiences, not verified diagnoses, repairs, failure rates or universal coverage. Exact functions vary by vehicle build, module, software, interface and tool version.
Sources are linked beside the relevant claims. Check reference findings against current compatibility information and actual equipment. Manufacturer-origin archived text supports period specification; its dates do not establish exact UK build cutoffs. Product documentation, UK costs and commercial destinations were checked on the review date and can change. Confirm current coverage for the actual vehicle and required controller before purchase.
