An A45 needs AMG engine and dual-clutch gearbox evidence, not just an A-Class badge on a scanner. ESP, all-wheel drive, body electronics and any fitted adaptive dampers are separate reading tasks. A useful basic engine report may still be enough for a limited emissions question.
Which UK A45 W176 is covered?
This guide covers the revised 381PS/280kW W176 A45 4MATIC documented in the UK brochure effective from 1 March 2017 production. Its model and technical tables identify a 1,991cc turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine and AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT seven-speed sports automatic. This is the later W176 specification, not the original 360PS branch and not the newer W177 A45/A45 S.
| Included branch | Identify on the car | Excluded initially |
|---|---|---|
| UK revised 381PS W176 A45 | AMG engine ECU; seven-speed AMG DCT; 4MATIC | Earlier 360PS, W177, A35 and non-AMG A-Class |
| March 2017 specification anchor | Actual dampers, fitted panoramic roof and body equipment | Imports, tuning and suspension/driveline conversions |
The dated brochure establishes this UK specification, not exact first or last factory days or continuous availability throughout a registration-year range. Match the actual build and power revision. AMG RIDE CONTROL is optional code 459 and can be included with AMG DYNAMIC PLUS P71; a mode selector alone does not establish adaptive-damper fitment. The package’s front-axle differential lock is not itself proof of a separately scannable controller.
What a real A45 owner asks
A Spain-based owner identifying a 2016 A45 reports assistance and stability warnings with markedly reduced power. The owner says Mercedes diagnostics recorded CAN communication errors and later reports arranging dealer assessment. Exact power revision, original market and software are not verified. The account identifies a need for a complete report; it does not establish a cause or a characteristic of every UK 381PS car.
The valuable information is which controller reported each fault, its full status and which units could not communicate. A clear emissions scan would not settle that question. No restart workaround, driving experiment, sensor replacement or assistance-system adjustment is adopted from the discussion. Follow the vehicle’s warning guidance and obtain appropriate professional assessment; a scan cannot certify the safety function’s performance.

V2 and V3 give different AMG engine evidence
The V2 A-Class176 reference, pages 4–5 explicitly names MED40AMG for M133 and DKG dual-clutch transmission control N15/13, with code-reading and live-data marks. ESP, SAM, doors and PSD panoramic-roof reading are also listed. These are useful documentary leads, but the family’s “ALL” label does not certify every revised 381PS ECU, parameter or software version. Dedicated A176 VG all-wheel-drive and ADS damping rows were not established in that V2 section.
The V3 A(176) reference, pages 3–4 instead explicitly identifies its petrol engine row as MED40 for M270. That is not specific AMG engine evidence. It separately lists VGSFDKG transmission control, ESP, VG all-wheel drive, ADS damping, SAM, doors and SD glass roof with reading/data marks. AMG DRVU is also named, but an AMG drive-unit menu does not fill the M133 engine gap.
| Reading task | Reviewed evidence | Before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| AMG engine | V2 explicit M133; V3 petrol row M270 | Exact revised AMG ECU and required output |
| AMG DCT | V2 DKG; V3 VGSFDKG | Actual seven-speed AMG controller/fields |
| ABS / ESP | Both references name ESP | Full supported fault/status report |
| 4MATIC | V3 VG; no V2 dedicated row established | Actual AWD unit, codes and desired values |
| Optional damping | V3 ADS; no V2 dedicated row established | Actual code459/P71 fitment and reading |
| Body / panoramic roof | SAM/doors and PSD or SD | Fitted equipment and relevant inputs |
When Mercedes-aware reading earns its cost
A confirmed ESP or body report adds information that an engine-only reader did not query. DCT and AWD reports can also help separate the source of a drivetrain warning. Their value is the identified information and interpretation, not a promise that a fault clear will repair the car. A communication code can be logged by a different module from the one named in its description.
For the combined warning/limited-power question, an interpreted specialist scan is a strong first purchase. For repeated, well-defined reading, compare suppliers against the actual AMG engine, DCT and required controllers. V2’s explicit M133 wording is stronger engine evidence than V3’s reviewed M270 row; V3’s VG/ADS entries are stronger documentary leads for those systems. Neither makes one version the automatic choice for every task.
Generic OBD2 versus Mercedes-aware diagnostics
A compatible basic EOBD/OBD2 reader can retrieve supported engine-emissions codes, readiness, freeze-frame and available standard data. A useful result can be enough for the initial question. It is not a complete ABS/ESP, body, roof, suspension or transmission report. Some transmission-related codes may be visible through an emissions route without establishing full gearbox communication.
Manufacturer-aware diagnostics can add the separately supported controller’s identity, full fault descriptions/status and relevant available data. That extra information can make a report more useful than an engine-only scan. It does not guarantee a repair or reveal every mechanical defect. Access varies with actual build, module, hardware, software, database and interface; a broad model heading is a starting point for confirmation.
Compare tools by the report you need
| Route | Where it can make sense | Confirm before paying |
|---|---|---|
| Basic compatible EOBD reader | Initial supported engine-emissions enquiry | Required standard information; no chassis/body promise. |
| LAUNCH Mercedes Creader / Creader Elite | Repeated Mercedes-specific reading | Exact unit/version, included brand software and required modules/data. |
| iCarsoft MB V2 / V3 | Standalone reading backed by the correct version’s evidence | Keep the two reference findings separate; require actual-build confirmation. |
| LAUNCH CRP129 EVO V3 | A confirmed engine/transmission/ABS/SRS task | Four-system scope is not full body/roof/suspension access. |
| LAUNCH CRP919S / Autel MD906 Pro | Broader or multi-car needs justify the package | Current exact-controller evidence, support, licences and updates. |
| Mercedes specialist | One complex warning or unconfirmed task | An interpreted report from named controllers and any communication gaps. |
The LAUNCH Creader Elite manufacturer page describes different brand configurations and versions. The iCarsoft V2 and V3 product pages describe separate Mercedes-focused products. Autel’s MD906 Pro manufacturer documentation provides another full-system candidate. None of those headlines settles the individual reading gaps identified above. No brand is the default recommendation.
The official UK CRP129 EVO V3 listing advertises four systems and lifetime Wi-Fi updates; check its current VAT-inclusive price. That category does not establish body, roof or suspension reading. The UK CRP919S listing showed £514.80 including VAT with two years of updates when checked on 25 October 2026. It is a broader candidate, not an exact-vehicle compatibility guarantee. Prices and packages can change.
Compare delivered UK price, included Mercedes licence, cables/interface, update period, later renewal cost, what remains usable after expiry, warranty and support. Ask about registration and the internet/computer requirements for setup. For Creader, iCarsoft and Autel obtain a quote for the exact supplied version rather than substituting a marketplace variant or overseas price. A one-off specialist report may cost less than buying and maintaining an uncertain setup.
Legitimate Mercedes diagnostics
For an unresolved or uncertain task, ask a Mercedes specialist which legitimately licensed system fits the actual build. The XENTRY Diagnosis Lite operation manual describes Windows software, a supplied diagnostic interface, contract, StartKey and time credits, with update/subscription arrangements. Confirm current UK eligibility, supported vehicle/interface and the full hardware, computer and recurring costs. A cheap software download is not an equivalent recommendation.
Ask the workshop to identify the actual units scanned, complete faults/status, relevant available information and any controllers that did not communicate. Interpretation is part of the value. Possession of software or a diagnostic socket does not prove every module is supported. No unlicensed copy, coding, programming, calibration, active-test or security-access capability is recommended here.

What to ask before buying or booking
Provide original market, build, engine, gearbox, body and fitted equipment. Supply a VIN privately to a reputable supplier if needed. Name the required controller and whether the task is code reading, status, a particular live value or a saved report. Ask for current-version evidence and return terms if the agreed reading is unavailable. One communicating engine controller does not demonstrate a complete vehicle scan.
Preserve the original full report, warning wording and circumstances before clearing information. Codes guide an investigation; they are not instructions to replace a component. Follow the matching handbook and arrange appropriate professional assessment for brake, restraint, roof or suspension warnings. A reset is not a diagnosis.
Common scanner questions
Do I need the most expensive reader?
No. Buy the least costly route that supplies the confirmed information you need. A basic reader can be enough for a supported engine task; a specialist report may be the better choice for an isolated complex complaint. More features do not certify mechanical condition.
Does an ASSYST PLUS function establish fault-diagnostic coverage?
No. Service information and fault diagnosis are different tasks. The ASSYST PLUS explanation is related servicing reading, not evidence of transmission, ESP or roof access. This article is a diagnostic buying guide, not a service-reset procedure.

Sources and limitations
Research reviewed: 25 October 2026. These are documentary findings. Unusual Cars has not independently tested the vehicles, scanners or functions. Owner discussions establish questions and reported experiences, not verified diagnoses, repairs, failure rates or universal coverage. Period UK brochures establish the stated specification anchors, not exact factory cutoffs or every intervening build.
Sources are linked beside the claims. Reference rows must be checked against current compatibility information and actual equipment. Unsupported exact functions are omitted or qualified; documentary evidence is sufficient for this guide. Product coverage, costs and commercial destinations must be rechecked before publication.
