1964 Hillman Imp representing the Hillman model guide collection

Rare & Forgotten Hillman Cars: Models, History & Guides

Hillman built some of Britain’s most familiar family cars, yet many have almost disappeared from everyday roads. This collection follows the marque from the long-running Minx through the rear-engined Imp, rally-proven Hunter and internationally successful Avenger. Each guide combines history and UK specifications with practical ownership and buying advice.

In this collection: every car below was officially offered on the UK market. The guides are arranged alphabetically and use documented model history rather than treating export-only derivatives as British showroom cars.

Eight chapters in Hillman history

From the streamlined pre-war Aero Minx and the long-running Minx family to the practical Husky, elegant Minx Californian and larger Super Minx, Hillman covered far more ground than its sober family-car reputation suggests. The rear-engined Imp brought genuine technical ambition, the Hunter proved its durability by winning the 1968 London–Sydney Marathon, and the Avenger became Rootes’ final clean-sheet design before living on under Chrysler and Talbot badges.

Together these cars show why Hillman deserves more than a footnote in histories of Rootes and Chrysler. They ranged from affordable everyday transport to technically adventurous small cars and credible sporting saloons. Today corrosion, low historic values and a shortage of model-specific trim make informed buying essential, so each guide separates broad history from the checks that matter on a surviving example.
