Police officers in Nottingham were left gobsmacked this week after pulling over 84-year-old Reginald McAdam, a man who has been driving without a license or insurance since the age of 12, a staggering 72 years of unlicensed motoring.
The elderly road rebel was stopped outside a Shell petrol station, where he was casually refuelling his classic Mini with premium V-Power petrol. When questioned about his choice of fuel, McAdam quipped, “when you don’t pay for insurance or road tax, you can afford the good stuff”.
“I Woulda Gotten Away With It Too, If It Wasn’t for You Meddling Coppers”
When questioned, McAdam showed absolutely zero remorse, telling officers:
“I don’t see what the fuss is about, lad. I’ve been driving longer than you’ve been alive, and I’ve only had three accidents. Maybe four. But that one wasn’t my fault”.
The pensioner didn’t even own a fake license, just pure, unshakable confidence, a strong belief in the Highway Code of Yesteryear, and the reflexes of a man who still signals using hand gestures.
”I Thought He Was Joking” Said Officer
PC Darren Clinker, the bemused officer who pulled McAdam over, said the moment was like something out of a comedy sketch:
“At first, I thought I’d misheard. When he told me he’d been driving since he was 12, I laughed and said, “And I’ve been playing FIFA since I was 10, but it doesn’t mean I should be in the Premier League. Then he pulled out his ration book and said he’d never been caught”.
McAdams ability to evade detection for over seven decades has left many comparing him to the elusive Lord Lucan. One local commented, “I reckon Reginalds been hiding in plain sight better than Lucan ever did. At least his only crime was dodging the DVLA, and not, well, you know…”.
Police Crack Down on ‘Suspiciously Smug Looking’ OAPs
Following the incident, officers have been instructed to keep a closer eye on smug-looking pensioners, particularly those who:
- Drive impeccably but have a twinkle of mischief in their eye.
- Refer to modern traffic laws as ‘newfangled nonsense’.
- Boast about how they’ve never had a single point on their nonexistent license.
High-risk zones include:
- Waitrose car parks, where they might be found discussing the merits of ‘war-time’ motoring.
- M&S food halls, where tales of ‘the good old days before road signs, flow as freely as the purchases of Gourmet Dine-In meals.
- Local bingo nights, where the competition isn’t just for a full house but for the longest unlicensed driving streak.
McAdams Fate
Despite finally being caught, McAdam showed no concern for his future driving prospects, stating:
“What are they gonna do? Ban me? I’ve already outwitted you lot for 72 years!”.
Meanwhile, officers are quietly wondering how many more OAPs are out there, still navigating Britains roads with the confidence of a man who doesn’t even know what an insurance policy looks like.
One thing’s for sure: If you see a pensioner in a Mini looking just a bit too pleased with himself, he’s either found an M&S two-dine-for-£12 deal in the reduced section or he’s just gotten away with seven decades of free motoring – Or Both.
