Mercedes-Benz SLK 32 AMG R170: History, Specs and Buying Guide

UNUSUAL CARS MODEL GUIDE

The R170 Mercedes-Benz SLK 32 AMG turned the compact folding-hardtop roadster into a serious performance car. Its supercharged 3.2-litre M112K V6 produced 260 kW (354 PS) and 450 Nm, making it far quicker than its discreet bodywork suggested.

Quick answer: SLK 32 buyers should verify genuine AMG identity, roof operation, supercharger and intercooler cooling, transmission servicing, engine mounts, suspension wear, corrosion and drain condition. Fewer reusable period photographs survive than for mainstream AMG models, so accurate mechanical documentation matters especially.

From innovative roadster to AMG flagship

The original SLK launched Mercedes-Benz’s Vario roof, a powered folding metal hardtop that combined coupé security with open-air motoring. AMG used the facelifted R170 as the basis for the SLK 32, adding a supercharged V6, stronger transmission calibration, larger brakes, revised suspension and restrained exterior changes.

The supercharged M112K V6

The 3,199 cc V6 used an Eaton-type supercharger and charge cooling to produce 260 kW (354 PS) and 450 Nm. Power went to the rear wheels through a five-speed automatic. The same basic AMG powertrain family appeared in the C32 AMG, but the shorter, lighter two-seat SLK created a distinct driving experience.

Vario roof and compact packaging

The folding hardtop remains central to the R170’s appeal, but it adds hydraulic cylinders, switches, locks, seals and drains that all need to work in sequence. Water ingress can damage trim and electrical equipment. A complete roof cycle should be tested repeatedly rather than accepted after a single demonstration.

Rarity and factory identity

The SLK 32 was produced in much smaller numbers than ordinary SLKs. Genuine cars should be checked using the VIN and factory data card, with AMG-specific engine, brakes, wheels and trim present. Modified SLK 230 and SLK 320 cars can resemble an SLK 32 externally.

Mercedes SLK 32 AMG buying guide

Operate the roof several times and inspect hydraulic leaks, seals, drains and boot partitions. Confirm that the supercharger engages cleanly and that the intercooler pump and cooling system control temperatures. Listen for pulley or bearing noise and inspect engine mounts and oil leaks. The automatic should shift smoothly. Check front suspension joints, rear bushes, brakes, tyres, wheel condition, corrosion around arches and jacking points, and every cabin electrical function.

Why it matters

The SLK 32 applied AMG’s supercharged performance formula to one of Mercedes-Benz’s smallest roadsters. Its speed, folding roof and understated appearance make it an unusually concentrated early-2000s AMG experience.
