On a first-generation CLA, ASSYST PLUS displays the next service due date and may show a letter with a suffix. Record the whole message before requesting a quotation. C117 Coupé and X117 Shooting Brake documentation explains the reminder, but a suffix such as B5 still needs verification against the exact car’s engine, equipment and service requirements.
C117 and X117: match the body and manual
This guide uses Mercedes’ February 2013 C117 Coupé manual and September 2015 X117 Shooting Brake manual. It covers their documented service displays, not the later C118/X118 system. Check the edition, body style and steering-wheel controls against your car before using a menu instruction.
The Shooting Brake PDF is English and manufacturer-hosted. Its visible disclaimer warns that country, equipment and vehicle differences are possible, so it does not prove every UK car uses an identical menu or service schedule. Your car’s supplied UK manual, service booklet and workshop information take priority where they differ.
Reading the ordinary service reminder
| Manual inspected | Normal owner-menu route | What it displays |
|---|---|---|
| 2013 C117 Coupé | Ignition on; select Service with the left/right steering-wheel buttons, then ASSYST PLUS with up/down and confirm. | Next service due date. |
| 2015 X117 Shooting Brake | Ignition on; select Serv., then ASSYST PLUS and confirm with the corresponding steering-wheel buttons. | Next service due date. |
Use these only when the matching controls and manual apply. This is the ordinary reminder screen, not a hidden workshop-data procedure. Record whether the message is upcoming, due or overdue, and whether it gives days or distance. A photograph of the exact screen is useful when booking the car in.
What does the complete code mean?
The Coupé manual explains A as the smaller service and B as the larger service, with an additional character indicating extra maintenance. The later Shooting Brake manual qualifies the additional-character explanation for certain countries. Neither inspected section supplies a complete engine-specific table translating every suffix into parts.
A CLA 180, CLA 220d or AMG quotation therefore needs its own vehicle context. A diesel does not acquire petrol spark-plug requirements because another CLA displayed the same suffix. Likewise, transmission work or equipment servicing should be confirmed separately. Use our B5 explanation for the verification approach and Mercedes service-code guide for the different kinds of code.
Three easily confused actions
Reading the due date tells you when the car expects attention. Hiding the message dismisses the current notification. Resetting or confirming maintenance changes the service reminder after work is completed. The inspected manuals direct accidental-reset correction to a qualified specialist; they do not tell owners to erase an inconvenient reminder.
The service reminder is not an engine oil-level reading. If you need to check oil level, follow that separate section in the matching manual. Do not use an unchanged service countdown as evidence that the oil quantity is correct.
Battery disconnection and demanding use
The inspected editions state that disconnected-battery periods are not included in the reminder’s time calculation. Keep a record of the due date and disconnection period and compare it with your service history. Ask the workshop to reconcile an inconsistent date rather than using a reset to conceal the difference.
The manuals also describe normal-use intervals and more frequent attention under demanding conditions, including repeated short journeys, stop-start city use and extended idling. They do not establish one replacement interval for every UK CLA engine. A specialist should explain any extra operation against the applicable schedule and the car’s usage.
Before accepting a service quotation
Supply the body style, engine variant, mileage, exact displayed message and service records. Ask which operations are scheduled now, which arise from inspection, and which are optional. Our workshop-code guide explains the service-sheet workflow; the workshop-data retrieval guide explains why the menu route must match the car.
For tool research, start with our diagnostic scanner guides and verify the required ASSYST capability for your exact variant. This page recommends no unverified scanner, fluid or part.
For the C117 CLA220d diesel application, our CLA220d maintenance guide brings together oil approval, filter references and relevant buying links. Match the guide’s engine and build scope before choosing parts; it does not cover every CLA in this service-message guide.
Sources and applicability
Mercedes 2013 C117 Coupé manual, printed pages 294–296; Mercedes 2015 X117 Shooting Brake manual, printed pages 339–340 and opening applicability disclaimer. These support reminder behaviour and the distinction between reading and resetting. Exact UK suffix maintenance scope remains vehicle-specific.
