Mercedes CLA220d C117 Service and Maintenance Guide

For a Mercedes CLA220d C117, start a maintenance plan with the exact vehicle version, service history and ASSYST message. Engine-oil approval, filter fitment and gearbox maintenance are separate checks; a B5 display does not supply a complete parts list. This guide brings together the verified starting points for the first-generation diesel Coupé and shows how to build a useful service record.

Which CLA220d does this guide cover?

The research starts with the 2017 C117 Coupé, including 4MATIC. The January 2017 owner manual is the principal owner source. Mercedes’ UK MY18.5 brochure lists the CLA220d and CLA220d 4MATIC as 2,143cc diesels with 7G-DCT automatic transmission, but it applies from 1 December 2017 production. That brochure cannot identify the transmission or equipment of an earlier-built individual car.

Use the vehicle documents to record the build version, engine, gearbox and drivetrain. A registration year, “220” badge or seven-speed description is not enough for every parts decision. This guide does not cover the petrol CLA220, CLA45 AMG or later C118. The X117 Shooting Brake needs its own applicability checks before Coupé data is reused.

Your maintenance record in one table

ItemWhat to establishWhat to keep
Engine oil and oil filterApplicable Mercedes oil approval, quantity basis and filter application.Oil approval, exact product/filter, date and mileage.
Air, cabin and fuel filtersWhich items are due and which parts match the build.Separate part numbers and replacement records.
Brake fluidThe applicable fluid approval and due requirement.Date and evidence of replacement, not merely a fluid-level check.
Gearbox and 4MATIC drivetrainExact units fitted, their maintenance requirements and previous work.Unit-specific fluid/specification and operation details.
Inspection and repairsWhich findings require work, distinct from scheduled replacements.Inspection report and authorised repair lines.

The table organises the information; it does not say every item is due at every visit. Keeping separate records prevents an invoice headed “full service” from becoming assumed evidence for an undocumented gearbox or fuel-filter job.

Engine oil is an approval decision

For an established passenger-car OM651 application with a diesel particulate filter, Mercedes sheet 223.2 marks MB 229.51 and MB 229.52 as applicable specifications. Check the matching vehicle manual and viscosity conditions as well. The January 2017 manual lists 6.5 litres including the oil filter for CLA220d and CLA220d 4MATIC oil changes. This is a documented quantity, not an instruction to add that amount to an engine already containing oil.

When comparing an oil service, request the approval number rather than accepting “fully synthetic diesel oil” as the whole description. Separate the oil specification from the seller’s compatibility claim. The filter has a different fitment question: a generic OM651 service kit should not be assumed to include the correct filter for every vehicle.

For the detailed approval, quantity and product-label checks, read our CLA220d engine-oil guide.

Brake fluid and filters need their own records

The manual specifies Mercedes-approved brake fluid to MB 331.0 and refers replacement intervals to the Service Booklet. A check of level is different from replacement. This guide does not supply a universal replacement interval or a bleeding procedure.

Record air, cabin and diesel fuel-filter work independently. Before purchasing, compare the supplier’s application with the vehicle’s body, build and equipment. A filter maker’s application list can support fitment research; it does not establish when Mercedes requires a replacement. We have not verified a complete UK replacement schedule for all these items in this first edition.

For the component selection checks, see our CLA220d oil and air-filter guide and right-hand-drive cabin-filter guide. These report manufacturer applications separately from replacement timing.

7G-DCT is a separate maintenance topic

The transmission named in the later UK brochure is 7G-DCT. Do not choose a fluid or service kit just because a listing says “Mercedes seven-speed automatic”. Confirm the actual transmission before adopting an interval, fluid approval or kit. Keep drivetrain records distinct from engine-oil servicing.

Our research has not yet established a complete applicable gearbox and 4MATIC fluid schedule for every car within this guide’s scope. Those gaps are kept separate from the oil information above. An engine service invoice without a gearbox operation should not be treated as proof that transmission maintenance was completed.

How ASSYST fits into the plan

Photograph the whole reminder and record the mileage. Use the CLA ASSYST PLUS guide for the system context and B5 explained for the limits of the visible suffix. The workshop-code guide explains the route to more specific maintenance data.

If the reminder is already overdue, our overdue-message guide covers the wording and booking questions. Clearing a reminder does not complete maintenance. This page provides no reset or hidden-menu sequence.

Compare a service quote against the record

Ask for a written scope separating base service, additional scheduled work and repairs. Check whether oil, filters, labour, VAT and service-record updates are included. Supply relevant prior invoices so an already completed operation can be considered accurately, rather than omitted or repeated on guesswork.

A useful quotation answers three questions: what is due, why it is due for this vehicle, and what the inclusive cost covers. The cheapest oil-change package may answer a different question from a full scheduled service. A higher bill should still have understandable itemised work.

Our CLA220d UK service-cost guide compares published garage examples and the questions to put in an itemised quotation request.

Build the record for your next service

  1. Keep a vehicle-details note and a dated photograph of the ASSYST message.
  2. File each invoice with the operations, approvals and part numbers it actually records.
  3. Note what was inspected, replaced or recommended for a later visit.
  4. Retain the updated maintenance record and the agreed next due information.

For tool research, use our diagnostic scanner guides. Reading generic fault codes, reading maintenance data and confirming a service are different capabilities. Require support for the exact function before buying.
