Mercedes E200/E250 CGI C207/A207 Oil: Capacity and Approvals

The inspected 2011 Mercedes C207/A207 manual lists 5.5 litres including the oil filter for its E200 and E250 BlueEFFICIENCY petrol entries. The model-specific oil table names MB 229.3, 229.5 and 229.51. This guide covers the early 1.8-litre CGI engines, rather than every car carrying an E200 or E250 badge.

Coverage: early 1,796 cc petrol E200 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY with M271.820 and E250 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY with M271.860, in C207 coupé and A207 cabriolet applications. Later 1,991 cc M274 petrol cars, CDI diesels and larger engines need separate specifications. Check the engine and body style rather than relying on the E200/E250 badge.

Oil quantity and approvals at a glance

E250 BlueEFFICIENCY5.5 litres229.3 / 229.5 / 229.51

MANN identifies the covered E200 CGI as M271.820, 135 kW, and the E250 CGI as M271.860, 150 kW. Match those identifiers and the applicable vehicle manual before using the table. The later 1,991 cc M274 engine requires its own check.

The capacity is a replacement reference for an oil change with filter renewal. It is not a top-up quantity. Other engines in the same manual have separate capacity rows, so a figure from an E350 or E250 CDI search result should not be substituted.

How much should you buy?

A five-litre container is short of the nominal 5.5-litre service amount. A five-litre plus one-litre purchase, or another combination totalling at least 5.5 litres, covers that reference quantity. Compare the total volume and exact oil formulation in each offer.

Six litres bought does not mean six litres should be poured into the engine. Correct filling and the final level check determine the amount needed. If you are topping up between services, add only the required amount under the car’s instructions rather than using the service capacity as a guide to the top-up.

Approval and viscosity are different checks

The MB approval identifies a specification; a grade such as 0W-40 describes viscosity. The manual explains that grade selection depends on outside temperature and the SAE guidance. Check both the permitted approval and appropriate viscosity for your vehicle.

Look for the exact product’s approval declaration. A retailer headline saying “Mercedes oil” or “5W-30” does not establish the approval. Equally, do not add 229.31 to this model-specific list simply because it appears in another Mercedes manual.

The manual contains a limited, one-off fallback allowance when the listed oils are unavailable. That is distinct from its routine oil-change table and should not be turned into a normal recommendation for a complete service fill.

Named product example: Mobil 1 FS 0W-40

Mobil’s current UK product information lists Mobil 1 FS 0W-40 with MB-Approval 229.3 and 229.5. Both appear in the inspected E200/E250 petrol table. It is a specific buying option where the car’s guidance permits that viscosity and approval.

Search Amazon for Mobil 1 FS 0W-40

The link opens a search. Confirm the complete FS 0W-40 product name, approval, pack size and seller on the actual listing. Other formulations, grades or accessories may appear; sharing the Mobil 1 name does not establish identical approvals.

Checking the level between services

The reviewed manual describes a dipstick check on level ground, with the engine switched off for approximately five minutes when it is at normal operating temperature. It says the dipstick position varies with the engine.

Use the method and marks for the car. The illustrated example is an E350, so do not copy an illustrated engine layout or assume a general minimum-to-maximum range is an exact top-up quantity for your CGI engine. Follow the applicable instructions, add carefully and avoid overfilling.

ASSYST PLUS reports servicing information rather than oil level. An oil-level warning needs its own response; resetting or dismissing the service message does not address it.

Confirm the filter and keep the specification on the invoice

Matching an oil approval does not confirm filter fitment. The early C207/A207 CGI parts guide explains MANN’s HU 514 y catalogue reference and the separately listed HU 514/1 y application, alongside the air and cabin filters.

Ask the service invoice to record the oil product, approval and complete filter reference. Our E200/E250 CGI maintenance guide helps you plan the remaining operations from the reminder, Service Booklet and previous renewal dates.

Explore the Mercedes maintenance hub. For separate warning lamps, gearbox or cabriolet roof faults, use the C207/A207 diagnostic scanner guide.

Sources and applicability

Checked 20 October 2026. The Mercedes-hosted English manual is labelled 2011 and covers coupé and cabriolet equipment. Its opening disclaimer limits the online document to German-market vehicles and says it does not replace the manual supplied with the car. UK owners should match their own manual, Service Booklet and supplements.
