Mercedes ML 500 W164 5.5 Scanner Guide: Gearbox, ESP and AIRMATIC

The later ML 500’s 5.5-litre V8 is a separate scope from the original 5.0-litre ML 500. The UK specification used here also makes AIRMATIC a central reading enquiry. Do not apply a general M-Class equipment summary to a particular ML 500 without checking it.

Which later UK ML 500 W164 is covered?

This guide covers the later 5,461cc M273 petrol V8 with seven-speed automatic and 4MATIC. Its firm UK specification anchor is the M-Class price list effective 1 April 2011, which lists ML 500 SE and Sport with 7G-Tronic. The Mercedes club engine reference helps distinguish the M273 from the earlier M113 5.0.

The engine revision and body facelift are separate checks. A June 2007 UK arrival report discusses the increased-output engine before the later facelift era. It is a chronology marker, not an exact UK build cutoff. The 2011 document establishes the later combination; an earlier 5.5 car needs its own equipment check. Exact last-build and registration boundaries are not established here.

Original 5.0-litre ML 500, ML 350, diesel, AMG, W163/W166, foreign ML 550, imports and LPG or other materially modified systems are excluded. Badge, registration and appearance alone are insufficient. Identify engine, actual build, suspension and fitted off-road equipment before requesting coverage.

What ML owners actually ask

In a UK M-Class buying discussion, a buyer asks whether AIRMATIC is fitted to every model. Replies mix early ML 500 ownership, diesel cars and a 2011 ML 500 in the UAE. They establish useful questions about air suspension, electrics and buying condition; overseas equipment and repair costs are not UK specification evidence.

For the documented April 2011 UK ML 500 SE/Sport, the manufacturer’s list specifies AIRMATIC as standard. General comments that most M-Class examples have coil springs should not override that model-specific evidence. Check the actual vehicle, especially if converted. A scanner cannot prove air springs, leaks, dampers or other mechanical parts sound merely because memory is clear.

What does the ML164 controller evidence show?

The V2 ML164 reference names ME9.7, transmission, ESP, body and transfer-case entries, but its suspension label is generic. The V3 M164 reference explicitly names AIRmatic as well as TCM and ESP. These broad lists also contain equipment outside this selected UK scope. Check each required reading task independently.

AIRMATIC, transfer case and gearbox are different tasks

A height warning needs a suspension enquiry, a shifting complaint needs the transmission ECU, and a concern about fitted low-range or differential equipment needs its own confirmed controller. The UK list describes an optional Off-Road Pro package separately. A permanent four-wheel-drive badge is not proof that every optional lock controller is fitted or readable.

An interpreted specialist report may be better value for a single air-suspension or drivetrain complaint. Request controller identity, faults/status, relevant available data and modules that failed to communicate. Readings can guide the next investigation; they do not replace inspection or certify mechanical condition. No hydraulic, air-line, underbody, levelling or operating-test procedure is provided.

For repeated confirmed reading, compare LAUNCH Mercedes, iCarsoft and suitable Autel tools. The more explicit V3 air-suspension entry is useful documentary evidence to take to a supplier, not a reason to assume it wins every task. A four-system tool can suit a confirmed gearbox/ESP enquiry, while roof, body, suspension and transfer-case access require separate evidence.

What can a basic OBD2 reader tell you?

On a compatible vehicle, generic EOBD/OBD2 can retrieve supported emissions-related codes, readiness, freeze-frame and engine data. Some transmission-related codes may appear there. This is a useful first step for an isolated engine-emissions question. It is not a complete scan of the transmission, ABS/ESP, body, roof or suspension controllers.

Manufacturer-aware reading can add the named controller’s identification, complete fault descriptions/status and supported live information. This matters when a basic reader returns no engine codes while another system displays a warning. “No faults”, “not fitted” and “cannot communicate” are different results. Keep those distinctions in the saved report.

The LAUNCH manufacturer Creader page covers different configurations. Confirm the exact Mercedes unit, included software, delivered price and update terms. The earlier regional Creader documentation is a different-generation reference. A shared family name or marketplace title does not prove identical coverage.

The iCarsoft V2 and V3 product documentation describe standalone readers and free updates. Obtain a current delivered UK quote and specific module confirmation. The reference lists above are useful evidence, but do not make iCarsoft the automatic choice. Autel MD906 Pro documentation describes another multi-system candidate with lifetime updates; confirm its exact UK package and task.

On 20 October 2026 the official UK CRP129 EVO V3 listing showed £346.80 including VAT and lifetime Wi-Fi updates. The CRP919S listing showed £514.80 including VAT and 24 months of updates. Recheck prices, renewal costs, retained functions and support before buying. Broader marketing does not certify this exact vehicle’s controllers.

Compare the complete cost: unit, required brand licence, cables/interface, delivery, updates and support. Ask what remains usable after any update term ends. If one specialist visit can provide the necessary information and interpretation for less, buying a more expensive reader may offer little benefit. No scanner ownership or hands-on testing claim is made here.

What about legitimate Mercedes diagnostics?

Ask a Mercedes specialist which legitimately licensed system suits the actual car and requested reading. A quotation described as a STAR scan should identify what the report includes. Request controller identity, full codes/status, relevant available data and modules that could not communicate.

The XENTRY Diagnosis Lite manual describes a commercial Windows setup with interface, contract, StartKey and time credits. Confirm current UK eligibility, chassis coverage and total costs. The XENTRY Pass Thru EU FAQ limits vehicle eligibility to qualifying Euro5/VI applications. Exact certification, interface and required module still matter. A connector or a Mercedes badge alone does not settle eligibility.

For occasional owner use, professional diagnosis can avoid the cost and maintenance of a complete legitimate setup. Copied-software bundles are not the legitimate alternative. This guide makes no promise of coding, programming, calibration, active tests, key programming or security access.

What to ask before buying or booking

Provide original market, build date, engine, gearbox, body and fitted equipment. Supply a VIN privately to a reputable supplier if needed. Name the controller and the specific codes, status or data you require. Obtain confirmation for the current hardware, firmware, vehicle database and complete interface, plus return terms if the agreed reading is unavailable.

Preserve the full original scan and circumstances before clearing anything. Fault information guides an investigation; it is not a parts order. For brake, restraint, roof or suspension warnings follow the vehicle handbook and seek appropriate professional assessment. No safety-critical repair procedure is given here.

Common scanner questions

Does a more expensive scanner guarantee the answer?

No. It may retrieve more information from supported modules. Intermittent wiring, power supply and mechanical concerns can still require assessment. Buy for the information needed, not a headline function count.

Can a service reset diagnose a warning?

No. A maintenance reminder and a diagnostic fault answer different questions. See the ASSYST explanation for context, using the system applicable to your actual car. This guide is not a reset procedure.

Research reviewed: 20 October 2026. Documentary research supports this guide. Unusual Cars has not independently tested the vehicles, scanners or functions. Owner discussions identify questions and reported experiences, not verified diagnoses, failure rates, repairs or universal coverage. Exact functions vary by vehicle build, module, software, interface and tool version.

Primary or manufacturer-origin documents and owner discussions are linked beside the relevant claims. Archived controller lists are references, not current exact-build certificates. Check current compatibility information, actual equipment and the required task. Product documentation, UK costs and commercial destinations were checked on the review date and can change. Confirm the exact current vehicle/controller task before purchase.
