Mercedes SLK R172 2.0 Scanner Guide: SLK 200, 300, 9G and Roof

The later 2.0-litre SLK needs a different scanner enquiry from the early 1.8-litre car. In particular, an earlier seven-speed transmission listing does not establish access to the later nine-speed automatic. Start with the engine, gearbox and specific information you want to read.

Which UK SLK 200 and SLK 300 are covered?

This guide covers the later 1,991cc turbo petrol SLK 200 and SLK 300 R172 before the SLC name change. The Mercedes club engine reference identifies the M274 engine and 2015–16 branch. Mercedes’ UK historical derivative list records revised SLK 200 and 9G-Tronic versions from 2 June 2015 to 21 April 2016. Those are recorded availability dates, not production-day boundaries.

Selected branchEngineTransmission enquiry
Later SLK 200 R1721,991cc M274 turbo petrolSix-speed manual or nine-speed automatic; establish actual gearbox.
SLK 300 R1721,991cc M274 turbo petrolNine-speed automatic; request its actual transmission ECU.

A UK retailer’s original SLK 300 vehicle record separately documents a 2015 car with 1,991cc and nine forward gears. It supports the existence of this UK-market combination, not a complete UK production range. Earlier 1,796cc SLK 200/250, SLK 350, diesel, AMG, SLC-badged cars, imports and materially modified systems are excluded. Registration year alone does not identify the engine.

The 2015 powertrain revision and 2016 SLC facelift/name change are separate boundaries. A brochure labelled “2015” can still describe the earlier 1.8/seven-speed range: the archived R172 brochure reviewed here does. Do not use its engine table to certify the later car. Roof and damping equipment must also be matched to actual fitment.

What later SLK owners actually ask

In a 2016 SLK 300 owner’s roof question, the owner describes a closing cycle that does not complete, roof warnings and rear windows that remain down. This gives a useful reading task: can the tool retrieve the actual roof controller’s faults and available sequence/input status? It does not establish the faulty part. The expert replies, suggested adjustments and automated summary are not adopted as repair instructions.

An SLK 300 contributor in a mixed-model discussion also asks about an unresolved starting issue after battery work. Most of that thread concerns other cars. It is a reminder to identify the affected module and preserve the full report, rather than transferring another model’s diagnosis. Key programming and security-access work are outside this guide.

What do the controller references actually establish?

The V2 V01.05 SLK172 reference and V3 SLK172 reference identify separate roof, stability and body reading. Their broad ALL groups span equipment and powertrains. An ETC or generic TCM row does not independently establish the later nine-speed controller, and generic engine entries do not certify the M274 ECU on every build.

When manufacturer-aware reading is useful

For the roof question, an engine-only scan can miss the module recording why a sequence stopped. Confirmed roof-controller reading may add its own fault detail and available input/status information, helping a specialist decide what to investigate. A data-list entry still does not guarantee every switch value or establish mechanical health.

For an automatic shift complaint, require a nine-speed-specific answer before buying. For a manual car, clutch or mechanical gear-selection complaints may need inspection more than a different scanner. Sports suspension or an AMG Sport badge alone does not establish electronic adaptive damping. Confirm the actual equipment before paying for ADS reading.

A one-off roof complaint with uncertain tool coverage often favours an interpreted specialist scan. A Mercedes-aware LAUNCH or suitable Autel can be sensible for repeated confirmed tasks, as can an appropriate iCarsoft. None earns a recommendation for the later gearbox merely by listing R172.

What can a basic OBD2 reader tell you?

On a compatible vehicle, generic EOBD/OBD2 can retrieve supported emissions-related codes, readiness, freeze-frame and engine data. Some transmission-related codes may appear there. This is a useful first step for an isolated engine-emissions question. It is not a complete scan of the transmission, ABS/ESP, body, roof or suspension controllers.

Manufacturer-aware reading can add the named controller’s identification, complete fault descriptions/status and supported live information. This matters when a basic reader returns no engine codes while another system displays a warning. “No faults”, “not fitted” and “cannot communicate” are different results. Keep those distinctions in the saved report.

The LAUNCH manufacturer Creader page covers different configurations. Confirm the exact Mercedes unit, included software, delivered price and update terms. The earlier regional Creader documentation is a different-generation reference. A shared family name or marketplace title does not prove identical coverage.

The iCarsoft V2 and V3 product documentation describe standalone readers and free updates. Obtain a current delivered UK quote and specific module confirmation. The reference lists above are useful evidence, but do not make iCarsoft the automatic choice. Autel MD906 Pro documentation describes another multi-system candidate with lifetime updates; confirm its exact UK package and task.

On 20 October 2026 the official UK CRP129 EVO V3 listing showed £346.80 including VAT and lifetime Wi-Fi updates. The CRP919S listing showed £514.80 including VAT and 24 months of updates. Recheck prices, renewal costs, retained functions and support before buying. Broader marketing does not certify this exact vehicle’s controllers.

Compare the complete cost: unit, required brand licence, cables/interface, delivery, updates and support. Ask what remains usable after any update term ends. If one specialist visit can provide the necessary information and interpretation for less, buying a more expensive reader may offer little benefit. No scanner ownership or hands-on testing claim is made here.

What about legitimate Mercedes diagnostics?

Ask a Mercedes specialist which legitimately licensed system suits the actual car and requested reading. A quotation described as a STAR scan should identify what the report includes. Request controller identity, full codes/status, relevant available data and modules that could not communicate.

The XENTRY Diagnosis Lite manual describes a commercial Windows setup with interface, contract, StartKey and time credits. Confirm current UK eligibility, chassis coverage and total costs. The XENTRY Pass Thru EU FAQ limits vehicle eligibility to qualifying Euro5/VI applications. Exact certification, interface and required module still matter. A connector or a Mercedes badge alone does not settle eligibility.

For occasional owner use, professional diagnosis can avoid the cost and maintenance of a complete legitimate setup. Copied-software bundles are not the legitimate alternative. This guide makes no promise of coding, programming, calibration, active tests, key programming or security access.

What to ask before buying or booking

Provide original market, build date, engine, gearbox, body and fitted equipment. Supply a VIN privately to a reputable supplier if needed. Name the controller and the specific codes, status or data you require. Obtain confirmation for the current hardware, firmware, vehicle database and complete interface, plus return terms if the agreed reading is unavailable.

Preserve the full original scan and circumstances before clearing anything. Fault information guides an investigation; it is not a parts order. For brake, restraint, roof or suspension warnings follow the vehicle handbook and seek appropriate professional assessment. No safety-critical repair procedure is given here.

Common scanner questions

Does a more expensive scanner guarantee the answer?

No. It may retrieve more information from supported modules. Intermittent wiring, power supply and mechanical concerns can still require assessment. Buy for the information needed, not a headline function count.

Can a service reset diagnose a warning?

No. A maintenance reminder and a diagnostic fault answer different questions. See the ASSYST explanation for context, using the system applicable to your actual car. This guide is not a reset procedure.

Research reviewed: 20 October 2026. Documentary research supports this guide. Unusual Cars has not independently tested the vehicles, scanners or functions. Owner discussions identify questions and reported experiences, not verified diagnoses, failure rates, repairs or universal coverage. Exact functions vary by vehicle build, module, software, interface and tool version.

Primary or manufacturer-origin documents and owner discussions are linked beside the relevant claims. Archived controller lists are references, not current exact-build certificates. Check current compatibility information, actual equipment and the required task. Product documentation, UK costs and commercial destinations were checked on the review date and can change. Confirm the exact current vehicle/controller task before purchase.
