For an SLK 55 AMG, distinguish V8 engine reading, seven-speed transmission reading and Vario-roof reading before buying. The folding hardtop and optional MAGIC SKY CONTROL are separate enquiries. A tool communicating with one does not establish the other.
Which UK SLK 55 AMG is covered?
The January 2012 UK launch announcement identifies the naturally aspirated 5.5-litre V8 and seven-speed AMG automatic. The 2014 UK SLK brochure documents 5,461cc, 421PS and AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic. This is the R172 V8, not the earlier R171 SLK 55 or the later SLC 43.
| Included | Transmission | Boundary |
|---|---|---|
| UK R172 SLK 55 AMG naturally aspirated 5.5 V8 | Seven-speed AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic | 2012 launch and pre-SLC range; match actual build. |
The working model period is the 2012–15 SLK 55 branch, with any later registration checked against actual production and original specification. The reviewed documents do not establish exact first/last UK production days. The later 2.0-litre SLK’s nine-speed revision is not this V8 powertrain. Exclude other SLK engines, SLC-badged cars, R171, overseas imports, conversions and materially modified vehicles.
What SLK 55 owners ask
A German R172 owner discussion about exhaust flaps and lost response includes reported loss of response at higher engine speed and subsequent workshop work. Other contributors dispute broad claims that every car suffers. Treat it as a reason to ask for engine faults and relevant available data, not proof of a universal defect, a UK repair campaign or a guaranteed exhaust-flap test.
A prospective buyer’s separate SLK 55 discussion asks about reports of several warnings appearing together. Replies include contrasting ownership experiences. This supports investigating the reporting systems separately; it does not establish failure rates. A UK R172 roof discussion also raises pre-purchase roof checks. A clear scan cannot certify roof hydraulics, seals or mechanical condition.

Check gearbox, ESP, body and roof separately
The V2 SLK172 reference and V3 SLK172 reference provide separate leads for ETC/TCM, ESP, body modules and roof controllers. The V2 list explicitly names MED177AMG motor electronics for the M152 engine; that is a more specific lead than the V3 generic ME row. Neither a broad ALL row nor a badge certifies every AMG ECU or current tool release. Ask about the actual V8 and seven-speed build.
| Task | Reference finding | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| V8 engine | V2 MED177AMG for M152; V3 generic ME | Exact AMG ECU and requested data require confirmation. |
| Seven-speed gearbox | ETC / TCM separate from selector | No transfer of later 2.0/nine-speed coverage. |
| ABS / ESP | Separate ESP/N30/4 | Engine-only communication is insufficient. |
| Body | Front/rear SAM and door entries | Confirm affected fitted controller. |
| Folding hardtop | VDS/N52 | Ask for faults and specific available sequence/input status. |
| MAGIC SKY CONTROL | MSC/N53 separate | Only if fitted; not folding-top-controller proof. |
| Suspension | Broad V3 ADS/N51/5 row | Does not establish SLK55 fitment or access. |
Do not buy an ADS feature solely for the AMG badge
The UK AMG section describes AMG-specific springs, dampers and torsion bars. General SLK pages describe a Dynamic Handling Package for other configurations. The reviewed evidence does not establish an electronically controlled ADS installation on this scoped SLK55. Confirm any exceptional equipment or modification before making a suspension-controller claim. No AIRMATIC or ABC coverage is implied.
For a roof that stops partway, ask whether the current tool can identify the fitted VDS controller and retrieve the specific status needed. A MAGIC SKY transparency complaint calls for MSC confirmation instead. Neither scan proves a microswitch, hydraulic component or wiring fault without interpretation. No roof override, adjustment or commanded operation is described.
SLK 55 scanner questions
Can the scanner diagnose cylinder-management or exhaust complaints?
Compatible engine reading may supply useful faults and data. Exact values and controller access need current confirmation. This guide does not promise individual cylinder-management readings or exhaust actuator tests.
Is the existing non-AMG R172 guide sufficient?
It explains related systems but excludes this V8. Use its context without assuming its engine or transmission coverage applies to the SLK55.
What can a basic OBD2 reader tell you?
On a compatible vehicle, generic EOBD/OBD2 can retrieve supported emissions-related codes, readiness, freeze-frame and engine data. Some transmission-related codes may appear there. This is a useful first step for an isolated engine-emissions question. It is not a complete scan of the transmission, ABS/ESP, body, roof or suspension controllers.
Manufacturer-aware reading can add the named controller’s identification, complete fault descriptions/status and supported live information. This matters when a basic reader returns no engine codes while another system displays a warning. “No faults”, “not fitted” and “cannot communicate” are different results. Keep those distinctions in the saved report.
Which scanner or scan is worth paying for?
| Route | When it makes sense | Confirm first |
|---|---|---|
| Compatible basic reader | Supported engine-emissions question | Required codes/data and protocol. |
| LAUNCH Creader Elite Mercedes | Repeated named Mercedes reading | Actual hardware generation, supplied software and controller. |
| iCarsoft MB V2.0 / V3.0 | Repeated marque-specific tasks | Separate current build/module evidence for each product. |
| LAUNCH CRP129 EVO V3 | Confirmed engine, gearbox, ABS or SRS reading | Four-system scope does not establish body, roof or suspension. |
| LAUNCH CRP919S / Autel MD906 Pro | Broader repeated or multi-car tasks | Exact coverage and total UK cost. |
| Specialist scan and interpretation | One unresolved or unconfirmed task | Named controller, complete report and explanation. |
The LAUNCH manufacturer Creader page covers different configurations. Confirm the exact Mercedes unit, included software, delivered price and update terms. The earlier regional Creader documentation is a different-generation reference. A shared family name or marketplace title does not prove identical coverage.
The iCarsoft V2 and V3 product documentation describe standalone readers and free updates. Obtain a current delivered UK quote and specific module confirmation. The reference lists above are useful evidence, but do not make iCarsoft the automatic choice. Autel MD906 Pro documentation describes another multi-system candidate with lifetime updates; confirm its exact UK package and task.
On 20 October 2026 the official UK CRP129 EVO V3 listing showed £346.80 including VAT and lifetime Wi-Fi updates. The CRP919S listing showed £514.80 including VAT and 24 months of updates. Recheck prices, renewal costs, retained functions and support before buying. Broader marketing does not certify this exact vehicle’s controllers.
Compare the complete cost: unit, required brand licence, cables/interface, delivery, updates and support. Ask what remains usable after any update term ends. If one specialist visit can provide the necessary information and interpretation for less, buying a more expensive reader may offer little benefit. No scanner ownership or hands-on testing claim is made here.
What about legitimate Mercedes diagnostics?
Ask a Mercedes specialist which legitimately licensed system suits the actual car and requested reading. A quotation described as a STAR scan should identify what the report includes. Request controller identity, full codes/status, relevant available data and modules that could not communicate.
The XENTRY Diagnosis Lite manual describes a commercial Windows setup with interface, contract, StartKey and time credits. Confirm current UK eligibility, chassis coverage and total costs. The XENTRY Pass Thru EU FAQ limits vehicle eligibility to qualifying Euro5/VI applications. Exact certification, interface and required module still matter. A connector or a Mercedes badge alone does not settle eligibility.
For occasional owner use, professional diagnosis can avoid the cost and maintenance of a complete legitimate setup. Copied-software bundles are not the legitimate alternative. This guide makes no promise of coding, programming, calibration, active tests, key programming or security access.

What to ask before buying or booking
Provide original market, build date, engine, gearbox, body and fitted equipment. Supply a VIN privately to a reputable supplier if needed. Name the controller and the specific codes, status or data you require. Obtain confirmation for the current hardware, firmware, vehicle database and complete interface, plus return terms if the agreed reading is unavailable.
Preserve the full original scan and circumstances before clearing anything. Fault information guides an investigation; it is not a parts order. For brake, restraint, roof or suspension warnings follow the vehicle handbook and seek appropriate professional assessment. No safety-critical repair procedure is given here.
Common scanner questions
Does a more expensive scanner guarantee the answer?
No. It may retrieve more information from supported modules. Intermittent wiring, power supply and mechanical concerns can still require assessment. Buy for the information needed, not a headline function count.
Can a service reset diagnose a warning?
No. A maintenance reminder and a diagnostic fault answer different questions. See the ASSYST explanation for context, using the system applicable to your actual car. This guide is not a reset procedure.
More Mercedes reading
Browse the Mercedes diagnostic guides and main diagnostic directory. The early non-AMG SLK R172 diagnostic guide covers a separate scope. The Mercedes model/history hub provides wider reading. Related vehicles do not share automatic tool compatibility.
Also in this Mercedes diagnostic series: C63 AMG W204/S204 — facelift saloon and estate · CLK 55 AMG C209/A209 — coupé and cabriolet. Check each guide’s defined vehicle scope before comparing equipment.
Sources and limitations
Research reviewed: 20 October 2026. Documentary research supports this guide. Unusual Cars has not independently tested the vehicles, scanners or functions. Owner discussions identify questions and reported experiences, not verified diagnoses, failure rates, repairs or universal coverage. Exact functions vary by vehicle build, module, software, interface and tool version.
Primary or manufacturer-origin documents and owner discussions are linked beside the relevant claims. Archived controller lists are references, not current exact-build certificates. Check current compatibility information, actual equipment and the required task. Product documentation, UK costs and commercial destinations were checked on the review date and can change. Confirm the exact current vehicle/controller task before purchase.
