An E63 suspension warning can require information that a generic engine reader never sees. The facelift E63 also changes the gearbox and brake enquiry from the earlier E55. Choose a reader for the actual controller and information needed, rather than treating W211 or AMG as a complete compatibility statement.
Which UK E63 AMG is covered?
This guide covers standard facelift W211 E63 AMG saloons and S211 estates with the naturally aspirated 6,208cc M156 V8 and AMG seven-speed automatic. The UK saloon price list from June 2006 documents the capacity, AMG Speedshift 7G-Tronic, Adaptive Brake and AMG suspension based on AIRMATIC DC. The “6.3” badge does not mean 6,300cc.
| Scope | Powertrain | Separate equipment enquiry |
|---|---|---|
| W211 E63 saloon | Naturally aspirated V8; seven-speed automatic | Actual engine, brake and suspension controllers. |
| S211 E63 estate | Naturally aspirated V8; seven-speed automatic | Estate body equipment and any powered tailgate/loading-floor module where fitted. |
The working generation is the 2006–09 facelift E63. Mercedes’ historical UK saloon and UK estate records independently list both bodies. These are availability anchors, not exact UK factory start/end days. The manufacturer’s facelift E-Class brochure describes AIRMATIC DC on the E63. Match actual build, body and original equipment; a later registration alone does not distinguish this car from its successor.
Earlier E55, W212 and later E63 generations, Performance Package/special editions, imports, suspension conversions and materially modified systems are excluded. The seven-speed here must not be treated as proof of support for a later E63 MCT transmission. There is no separate pre-facelift W211 E63 branch in this guide.
What E63 owners actually ask
A 2007 E63 owner reports a suspension warning and rear sagging while a non-Mercedes-specific OBD2 reader returns no faults. The owner then asks whether a Mercedes-compatible reader would help. This is a particularly clear reason to request the suspension controller’s own report. The Australian discussion does not establish a UK failure rate, a failed valve block or a confirmed repair. Its later Foxwell purchase is an owner decision, not an independently verified product test.
Another 2007 E63 owner reports that an older reader will not connect although a borrowed reader does. That does not prove the car is “not fully OBD2”, as suggested within the discussion. It shows why protocol, hardware/software version and required diagnostic mode need checking. Old forum product prices and app recommendations are not current buying advice.

Use the facelift controller branch
The V2 E-Class211 reference separates the branch from June 2006. It names ME 9.7 (AMG), ETC transmission control, ABR Adaptive Brake and AIRmatic. The V3 E211 reference also separates this later branch and names AMG engine, TCM and ABR, but uses generic “Suspension” wording. Its suspension label alone does not identify the exact air/damping controller or available values.
| Reading task | Documentary finding | Limit before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| M156 engine | AMG ME9.7 entries in both references | Confirm actual ECU and required faults/data. |
| Seven-speed automatic | V2 ETC / V3 TCM; ESM selector separate | A selector report alone is not a transmission scan. |
| ABS / stability / braking | Later ABR entry; UK E63 specification includes ESP | Confirm the fitted brake/stability report; do not transfer earlier SBC rows. |
| Air suspension | V2 explicit AIRmatic; V3 generic Suspension | Require exact current controller and data confirmation. |
| Body / estate equipment | SAM, doors and distinct rear-end/loading-floor entries | Only fitted equipment; no all-estate guarantee. |
| Optional glass roof | OCP overhead-panel entry | Dedicated sunroof status coverage not established here. |
What useful information would an enhanced scan add?
For the sagging-car question, supported suspension faults, status and particular available readings can direct further investigation when an emissions scan is empty. They cannot certify a compressor, valve block, air spring or damper. A physically low car needs appropriate assessment; an apparently clear engine report is not reassurance about its suspension.
For a shift complaint, request the actual seven-speed controller’s complete faults/status and relevant supported data, keeping the selector enquiry separate. For an estate body complaint, specify the powered rear door or other fitted controller rather than asking only whether the reader covers “body”. A one-off interpreted specialist scan can cost less than a tool whose precise access remains unconfirmed.
E63 scanner questions
Should the recommendation include SBC functions?
The scoped facelift E63 uses the later Adaptive Brake enquiry. Earlier E55 SBC claims are not transferred. No brake-service procedure or operating function is recommended.
Does AMG suspension mean every scanner can read it?
No. Factory equipment establishes the system to investigate. It does not establish any particular reader’s current controller access or complete live-data list.
What can a basic OBD2 reader tell you?
On a compatible vehicle, generic EOBD/OBD2 can retrieve supported emissions-related codes, readiness, freeze-frame and engine data. Some transmission-related codes may appear there. This is a useful first step for an isolated engine-emissions question. It is not a complete scan of the transmission, ABS/ESP, body, roof or suspension controllers.
Manufacturer-aware reading can add the named controller’s identification, complete fault descriptions/status and supported live information. This matters when a basic reader returns no engine codes while another system displays a warning. “No faults”, “not fitted” and “cannot communicate” are different results. Keep those distinctions in the saved report.
Which scanner or scan is worth paying for?
| Route | When it makes sense | Confirm first |
|---|---|---|
| Compatible basic reader | Supported engine-emissions question | Required codes/data and protocol. |
| LAUNCH Creader Elite Mercedes | Repeated named Mercedes reading | Actual hardware generation, supplied software and controller. |
| iCarsoft MB V2.0 / V3.0 | Repeated marque-specific tasks | Separate current build/module evidence for each product. |
| LAUNCH CRP129 EVO V3 | Confirmed engine, gearbox, ABS or SRS reading | Four-system scope does not establish body, roof or suspension. |
| LAUNCH CRP919S / Autel MD906 Pro | Broader repeated or multi-car tasks | Exact coverage and total UK cost. |
| Specialist scan and interpretation | One unresolved or unconfirmed task | Named controller, complete report and explanation. |
The LAUNCH manufacturer Creader page covers different configurations. Confirm the exact Mercedes unit, included software, delivered price and update terms. The earlier regional Creader documentation is a different-generation reference. A shared family name or marketplace title does not prove identical coverage.
The iCarsoft V2 and V3 product documentation describe standalone readers and free updates. Obtain a current delivered UK quote and specific module confirmation. The reference lists above are useful evidence, but do not make iCarsoft the automatic choice. Autel MD906 Pro documentation describes another multi-system candidate with lifetime updates; confirm its exact UK package and task.
On 23 October 2026 the official UK CRP129 EVO V3 listing showed £346.80 including VAT and lifetime Wi-Fi updates. The CRP919S listing showed £514.80 including VAT and 24 months of updates. Recheck prices, renewal costs, retained functions and support before buying. Broader marketing does not certify this exact vehicle’s controllers.
Compare the complete cost: unit, required brand licence, cables/interface, delivery, updates and support. Ask what remains usable after any update term ends. If one specialist visit can provide the necessary information and interpretation for less, buying a more expensive reader may offer little benefit. No scanner ownership or hands-on testing claim is made here.
What about legitimate Mercedes diagnostics?
Ask a Mercedes specialist which legitimately licensed system suits the actual car and requested reading. A quotation described as a STAR scan should identify what the report includes. Request controller identity, full codes/status, relevant available data and modules that could not communicate.
The XENTRY Diagnosis Lite manual describes a commercial Windows setup with interface, contract, StartKey and time credits. Confirm current UK eligibility, chassis coverage and total costs. The XENTRY Pass Thru EU FAQ limits vehicle eligibility to qualifying Euro5/VI applications; eligibility for these older scoped builds is not established here. Exact certification, interface and required module still matter. A connector or a Mercedes badge alone does not settle eligibility.
For occasional owner use, professional diagnosis can avoid the cost and maintenance of a complete legitimate setup. Copied-software bundles are not the legitimate alternative. This guide makes no promise of coding, programming, calibration, active tests, key programming or security access.

What to ask before buying or booking
Provide original market, build date, engine, gearbox, body and fitted equipment. Supply a VIN privately to a reputable supplier if needed. Name the controller and the specific codes, status or data you require. Obtain confirmation for the current hardware, firmware, vehicle database and complete interface, plus return terms if the agreed reading is unavailable.
Preserve the full original scan and circumstances before clearing anything. Fault information guides an investigation; it is not a parts order. For brake, restraint, roof or suspension warnings follow the vehicle handbook and seek appropriate professional assessment. No safety-critical repair procedure is given here.
Common scanner questions
Does a more expensive scanner guarantee the answer?
No. It may retrieve more information from supported modules. Intermittent wiring, power supply and mechanical concerns can still require assessment. Buy for the information needed, not a headline function count.
Can a service reset diagnose a warning?
No. A maintenance reminder and a diagnostic fault answer different questions. See the ASSYST explanation for context, using the system applicable to your actual car. This guide is not a reset procedure.

Sources and limitations
Research reviewed: 23 October 2026. Documentary research supports this guide. Unusual Cars has not independently tested the vehicles, scanners or functions. Owner discussions identify questions and reported experiences, not verified diagnoses, failure rates, repairs or universal coverage. Exact functions vary by vehicle build, module, software, interface and tool version.
Primary or manufacturer-origin documents and owner discussions are linked beside the relevant claims. Archived controller lists are references, not current exact-build certificates. Check current compatibility information, actual equipment and the required task. Product documentation, UK costs and commercial destinations were checked on the review date and can change. Confirm the exact current vehicle/controller task before purchase.
